Some people took it so seriously when you said "Your mother? The only way she could find out you were here is if one of the scientists talked while buying her off the street corner. Hey, who knows, maybe she'll ask when her mouth isn't full--"
There was more to that sentence, but he got punched in the face.

Licking his cheek to break the team work exercise was hilarious. The resulting surgery without anaesthesia to repair his broken arm? Less so.
...Still worth it.

He couldn't believe she had been so easily convinced their meals were made out of the dead.
Everyone knew that was what they fed the dogs.

The infirmary was boring. Terribly, terribly boring. His favourite targets had escaped the blast, Dr. Takagawa was staring at the wall again, and that meant Saburo would have to make his own entertainment.
There were few people to talk to, but one was awake. He had bet the new children wouldn't last a fortnight, and if he had had anything to bet, and if anyone had taken him up on it, he would have won; Only one was left of the youngest now.
He sat on the edge of her bed and tried to remember who she was, but it blurred together. A cross, right? She had been clinging to it before they took everything away.
"So, where's your god now?"
"He's there." She answered, which would have been impressive after all this if it hadn't been so entirely idiotic.
"Really? So you're just going to lie there pathetically and wait for heaven to show up?"
"No."
"Oh, or maybe you'll get rescued? Maybe someone with wings could just fly in and carry you out?"
"No. Not heaven."
"Or-- What?"
"I was bad." She explained, simply. "I can't go to where mummy and daddy are. I'm going to hell."
"Great. You're insane. More insane, I mean, the standards here are pretty low."
Saburo got up from the bed, turned away, only stopping when he felt a weak tug at the corner of his shirt. Her hand was tiny.
"Anywhere's better than this." She said, and tried to sound brave.
He sat back down.

Dr. Takagawa was screaming at the nurses-- How did the monitor get disconnected, how didn't you notice her pulling those IVs out, what did she choke on, how long has she been flat-lining-- Which Saburo could hear from his bed.
He clapped his hands together, but couldn't remember what to whisper past please.
