You don't quarter your seed potatoes? We always did - quarter or half depending on the size of the seed potato.
Maybe it's a different variety? We grew the traditional white potatoes because it was hard enough doing a tuber type crop in our heavier soil as it was. It was funny - every so often the ex would get sick of strawberries and pull/dig up all the plants and swear No More Strawberries (because the kids and I liked them but he didn't) and of course that would become my new potato (and carrot and onion) bed because the soil was always so nice. We used a lot of sand because we had really clay-ey soil. Something with the strawberries kept the soil nice.
