Regarding the other one that I am using for the challenge... It currently has just over 8k words - except I expect a lot of those to end up deleted because it is going to undergo a major rewrite, so how do I figure it? Take the word count that I end up with for that section AFTER the rewrite? That's the only thing I'm still confused about. ;-)
Okay, if I understand your question right, I'm going to say as long as you WRITE those 20,000 words in those three months it doesn't much matter what ends up on the cutting table. Of course your finished product has to be a minimum of 20,000 words, but if you start out with 8,000 words on August 1st and need to do some deleting, whatever you delete will be your new status quo. If you delete 3,000 words, then you're starting out with 5,000 words that you need to add 20,000 more on to.
Honestly, I really never considered a dilemma like this because it didn't seem likely that it would come up. :) This challenge is still supposed to be fairly casual and laid-back, so as long as you write 20,000 words between August 1st and October 31st, it can go towards any word count you need it to.
