Right now they're in closed beta so people are getting invites because they're working on the project or they know people working on the project. I'm actually not sure how they'll distribute open beta invites - I think they'll be giving them to folks who have signed up for open beta launch. After that, people can get invites either by knowing someone with a DW account or via various invite communities that will spring up once people have invites and no one to give them to. :)
You (thankfully) won't have to murder, cheat, OR steal to get two codes. :) Firstly, I'll be passing out invites to my friends list. Secondly, when you get an invite, you will get eventually (if not immediately) get some more invites to hand out to YOUR friends and you're free to use as many of those for your personal use as you want.
Lastly, if you don't want to put your chances of getting an invite code on MY chances of getting an invite code, go to www.dreamwidth.org and sign up for the dw-discuss mailing list. They'll be releasing info about joining open beta sometime in March or April. ;)
