I just had one of the best weekends ever. Instead of trying to find Christmas gifts for the family, we all did the "Zoofari" at Dubbo's Western Plains Zoo together. I'm still trying to work out what my favourite bit was. I'm not sure if it was:
  • being 2m away from a Sumatran tiger as it was being fed
The tiger's jaws are amazingly poweful. I ( Read more... )

Haha! Your experience reminds me of two things:

1. When I visited that Dubbo Western Plains Zoo way back when (I think I was about five at the time). I was looking at the Giant Tortoise (sp?), sitting on the wall with my legs between the top of the wall and the railing... and my thongs fell off into the enclosure!!!

2. The last time I went to the awesome Melbourne Zoo. It was with Rach, when she was here last year. We had a great day checking out all the animals. We had checked out the lions already, but as we were walking past to go see some other animals, they were feeding the lions, so we stopped to watch. There were actually some random people (not zoo keepers) feeding the lions (together with the zoo keepers), throwing the meat through the fence. Well, one of the lions wasn't too impressed. He turned around, raised his tail, and PEED all over the people feeding him! It was hilarious. Needless to say, Rach and I made a hasty exit, because we didn't feel like being showered with lion pee!!

That sounds like so much fun! I absolutely adore hippos and it'd be so much fun to be able to see them be all awake at night.

Wow. We went to Dubbo for a stopover when we drove from Adelaide to Qld a few years ago. I didn't realise they have such a great Zoo!

Dubbo is in country NSW, right? Just wanna make sure I'm thinking about the same Dubbo :)

Yes, Dubbo is in NSW's Central West. Its about 5.5 hours from Sydney and 8 hours from Brisbane and Melbourne.

I love going to the zoo. How neat that you got to see so many of the animals being fed. For some reason, that always interests me. YAY for seeing the baby rhino, too! How cute!
