I have a Vegvisir on my left shoulder- my friend Tiffany and I both got ours at the same time, less than two weeks after I turned 18. No appointments, she just said "We're doing it TODAY!" and nitpicked me until I drove over to the tattoo parlor. She dragged me in there.
Mine is sideways, though- North is actually facing East! I didn't notice until I'd had it about a year. Nobody but me knows what it is anyway, so nobody else cares. I don't have a picture, though...
I'll probably get another Bjork-related tattoo later on. She's been a huge part of my life for nearly ten years, which is incredible to think about, I was twelve when I first picked up Vespertine out of pure curiosity and now I'm 21. It's still a favorite of mine!
Thanks for sharing your experience. A lot of people are afraid of tattoos and it's just not a big deal at all. I was expecting so much and I was surprised at how little pain I felt.
I'm a teacher of 7th grade students and when it comes to their musical interests, it makes me a little sad that some of them might never like an artist like Bjork or would discount her as weird or just someone to laugh at. I think it's cool that you were listening to her at 12.
I admit, the only reason I started listening to Bjork, is that 1. My family was stationed at Keflavik, Iceland (on an American military base, which is no longer there) from 1989 to 1991, leaving me with an interest in anything Icelandic, and 2. I was watching an MTV special on Wayne's World in, lordy, 1994? --and they showed the video for Human Behavior and were joking about how she was from Iceland. It piqued my curiosity, so my parents bought me Post for Christmas in 1995. At the time, I mostly listened to Top-40 radio!
Hmmm. I wonder how much else of my musical tastes stem from giving Bjork a chance back then, instead of only listening to music I'd already heard a billion times before on the radio.
I'll also openly admit that, especially after Bjork, I'm much more willing to give a random band/musician a chance if someone tells me they're from Iceland. Like Sigur Ros and Mum...
