South Dakota on Abortion

I am curious how such an overwhelming vote of support by the legislature, and by extension the people themselves, can be construed as:

"Proof positive" that the governor "cares more about politics than about the health and safety of women." -Planned Parenthood

My opinion is that women planning to get an abortion move out of South Dakota. I would ( Read more... )

The thing of it is, this law is unconstitutional. As for the PP remark, it is based on the fact that the SD gov was a major proponant of the bill. As he has the authority to veto the law and chooses not to because of his political agenda, it shows he doesn't care one damn bit what the law already is. They are gunning to over-turn Roe v. Wade and the only hope we have is that a federal court will strike it down, and then the federal appeals court refuses to hear the appeal. If it goes to the SC, we can only hope that they prefer to abide by their own recent precedent rather than a politcal agenda formed by religious maniacs.

This law, other like it soon to be passed in other states (like the one I live in), and the contempt for the Constitution shown by the state of Missery is making Canada appear a lot more inviting. I fear what will happen to this country as the religioush riech continues to gain power and influence.

I'd be interested in knowing exactly where the constitution protects abortion. Hell, even a right to privacy is a legal fiction.

Interesting point on Roe V. Wade- its not that solid-- many aspects of it have already been overtuned as it was a wrong legal decision. Now I won't comment on how I feel about abortion, personal rhetoric not being helpful, but if its to be protected... Roe V. Wade is not the vehicle to do so... it needs something more ironclad. This case ain't it.

Back to the PP quote: It's still bullshit. It seems that the Sovereign State of South Dakota has spoken loud and clear through the vehicle of its elected officials.

I have lived in South Dakota and I know for a fact that the overwhelming majority of that citizenry supports such things. For all their quirks, many find children still a joy to be had- even the ones who do not deserve them. Of course here is the other thing- only that PP clinic will be affected to be honest. All of the hopsitals in SD are church-owned hospitals and not bound to render such things anyway unless they feel reason ( ... )
