Trying to make flight plans for a couple when the procurement of tickets for one of couple is completely out of the couple's control? Extremely frustrating

What i've found that works (not useful for this one probly but....going on trip x for work: can you buy them and ask for reinbursement? Go talk to works' travel agent w/ your research...(most are human..:) and willing to help)

also start as early as possible and stay on top of the issue...

Already asked. My tickets must go through work's travel agent, they will not reimburse, and personal tickets cannot go through work's travel agent.
