I resent that they used a Ford Windstar/Freestar for this picture. I have one of those, and I love it :-( . And it's not a 'shitty car'. I've always driven a Ford vehicle. Mine's even the same colour as the one in the picture :-| I feel dirty now.
(course, mine was built in Canada, not the US. Though the auto manufacturing sector up here is going through the same thing as the American one. And I don't know the statistics (I guess I should research that) but I do know that many, many other jobs in the cities that make cars are directly dependent on the auto industry as well; things like parts manufacturing, support industries/services (more people, more grocery stores, more banks, more gov't jobs all related), more schools for the children of those workers etc.
I agree about the Ford. I doubt whoever made this even thought about it. Ford actually pulled out of the bailout request yesterday. They decided they could manage on their own with some adjustments. Props to them!
There's always a domino effect when a major industry fails. We saw it here in WV when the steel industry went under, but at the same time Detroit has brought this on themselves by not listening to the concerns of the car buyer and understanding that their competition, foreign cars, were out distancing them with mileage and service warranties. In some ways they feel as if that economic threat is something they can hold over America's head.
