If you want a terrible Castlevania game, try the Japanese arcade game, "Haunted Castle". It is almost impossible to psychologically accept how bad that game is.
I just downloaded Castlevania III on the Virtual Console the other day, and man, does that game hold up. A lot of the stuff on the VC feels dated, but CIII is still as fun today as it was when I first played it at my cousin's house.
I think I could just spend a whole day making Grant climb walls and ceilings.
I was playing it on my NES a few days ago. It's a great game.
Apparently I've had a ROM of Akumajō Densetsu sitting on my computer for a while. The Japanese version is as good as I've heard. The sound is markedly better.
Since selling my PC Engine Duo RX, I've just been emulating Rondo. PC Engine emulation using Magic Engine is far superior to playing the actual console anyway. If you don't have it, I'd recommend getting it. There is actually a standalone "freeware" version of Rondo available via bitorrent. It's such a marvelous game.

Now, how it plays is a different story...
