My former co-workers will be saddened to see that it took me this long to get the word out on what's happening around Guantanmo and the rights of the detainees there. This shit is as basic as the law gets. Everyone should have a trial, everyone should get a lawyer. If you don't think that, then you're an asshole and no friend to freedom either.

I completely support this petition, as you know. I have been writing Specter approximately every two months to tell him the same, so I'm glad to hear that he's doing something.

But my question for people who know more about how politicos respond to this stuff is whether it's worth my time to petition/write/call when my senators are Specter (the sponsor of the amendment) and Santorum (a raging asshole). Seems like no amount of what I say to either will get them to do anything different.

Anyway - to all you with senators who are even slightly persuadable - do this for sure. Habeas is basically the only post-appeal tool to address government power.

well, yeah the chances of you getting Santorum to support, oh the rule of law, are pretty slim. But staffers do log the phone calls and faxes sent to office, and if the numbers are big enough, the senators do pay attention. Even if they don't, there's smaller goods that come out of it. The staffers talk, the issue gets discussed, and maybe the name of CCR or the idea of Habeas gains a little more traction, all good things in my opinion...
