it isn't so much that gay marriage was ruled unconstitutional, but that even straight couples who, before, would have been eligible for common law marriage (8+ years) get nothing from the state, even if they have children that call them Mom and Dad, it means nothing. that is insulting.
and i also must say that for a minute when i first saw campaign ads and signs that read "vote yes to marriage," i got a little confused. they had formed their strategy in such a way that one could argue if you voted 'no' to amendment 1, then you were voting no to the sacred and holy tradition of marriage itself.
i still have hope for virginia, though. there has to be something that can be done, aside from everyone moving away. roanoke, i've found, is incredibly, 1000 fold more tolerant than the town where i grew up. so there's hope yet, i think.
