How do you designers do it? I feel like there's always something that's not quite right, or that could be tweaked a little bit. It's enough to drive a person (me) insane. How do you know when to just let go and say it's good enough ( Read more... )

At some point you just get tired of working on something, or need to switch to working on something else. When I work on my own projects I'm always spending way more time tweaking everything. For work though, I just don't care quite as much so good enough is good enough. haha.

I've actually done redesign projects on things 4 or 5 times before I'm finally happy with how it looks.

Is this application for the job you already got (IE, the promotion) or is this for a different job outside the company? If it's for the job inside the company how perfect does your resume have to be? Is this not just a formality? Reason I ask is that sometimes you end up wasting a lot of time for something that ultimately isn't important to anybody that you think it will be important to (IE, the HR person who will simply place your amazingly designed resume in a file cabinet somewhere and never actually look at it in any detail...) If you really need it to be pretty, by all means go for it, but otherwise don't drive yourself insane! ;)

It's for the promotion. I know I already have the job and this is just a formality, but the reason I feel so attached to making my resume as bomb as it can be is because I have this crazy idea that it might help back up my case in the salary negotiation stage ( ... )

It is never finished. That's the beauty of it all. You just need to have faith in your work that when you let it go - it's right. It's sometimes a delicate balance... but one that I relish in all the time.

There is a correct answer to the "wishy washy subjective crap" though... the RESULT is the part that is under subjectivity. When it is released by me then I've considered it perfect.

One thing that helps to remember is that 90% of the population has poor taste and little knowledge of design, and wouldn't recognize aesthetics if they smacked them upside the head.

Alas, artistic efforts are usually wasted on the insipid ignorance of the uncivilized general public.

90%?! That is being safe! I usually think it is about 95%... but then it might be because I'm a total fascist when it comes to design.
