There is an old tradition stating that any encounter with the sea is preordained and that any interference in such encounters will cause the sea's wrath to turn back on the interferer. Indeed, those sailors should be more responsible.

I might be indifferent about some things, but I could never be that level of indifferent.

Ouch indeed.

I had never heard of that 'tradition' before. Have to admit I giggled at the other sailors calling down things like "throw us your wallet!" and "I'm going to start dating your wife, I hope that's okay!"... though still a little chilled at the idea that they'd do that and not help!

Who says anyone is here to do any good? Why is this a rule now?

I think it kind of comes down to pragmatism. Or game theory, if you'd like. We do good for other people because then other people are more likely to do good for us. We're not especially expecting an immediate payoff, but somewhere down the line, we're increasing our own odds of one of those people we're kind to returning the kindness.
