I might be indifferent about some things, but I could never be that level of indifferent.

I had never heard of that 'tradition' before. Have to admit I giggled at the other sailors calling down things like "throw us your wallet!" and "I'm going to start dating your wife, I hope that's okay!"... though still a little chilled at the idea that they'd do that and not help!

I think it kind of comes down to pragmatism. Or game theory, if you'd like. We do good for other people because then other people are more likely to do good for us. We're not especially expecting an immediate payoff, but somewhere down the line, we're increasing our own odds of one of those people we're kind to returning the kindness.
