going relaxer-less without the bc?

for about a year now i've been thinking about going natural. but my problem is that i can't do the big chop. it's almost entirely fear, but i also know that i don't have a face suited for short hair. i'm considering easing into short hair by cutting regularly so that (hopefully) in a few years i can be fully natural ( Read more... )

i personally think you do have a face suited for short non-relaxed hair. your bone structure is just pronounced enough and absolutely beautiful for your face to really shine. as for everything else, i can't give advice as my hair is simply wavy. :/

thanks for your comment! i've always thought that because my forehead is so big that short hair will make me look like an alien or something haha

I don't really have any advice, I transitions for four months before I BCed because I got really tired of dealing with the two textures and the breakage. Long-term transitioning can be done but personally, I didn't have the patience for it. I was nervous right before doing it but honestly, once my stylist mades the first cut and I realized there was no going back, it was no big deal. After a couple of days of getting used to looking in the mirror and seeing that I had no hair, I wondered why I hadn't done it sooner.

And I agree that you could definitely pull off short hair, you have a great face!

I'm worried I don't have the patience for it, either. After about 5 months of going without a relaxer (I had been planning on the BC) I ended up touching-up because I wimped out. So that could just happen again. I've never even had a proper haircut before so the thought of getting rid of all my hair is hard. Especially because I've always wanted long hair :/

I agree with washyuu, you definitely have the face for short hair.

With that said, yes, you'll be dealing with breakage. A lot of it. I transitioned (because I hated relaxers, and because I was just downright too lazy anyways) in very slow fashion by just letting my hair grow and slowly trimming off the dead and damaged ends when I saw fit. Because I kept putting heat on it for a good while, I had maaaajor heat damage as well as the breakage from relaxers. There were hairs that were split almost the entire length of the hair! D:

After I stopped putting heat on it though, my hair grew rapidly. I looked up about a year and a half later and all of the dead ends were gone.

But I'll be honest: it took about 3 years for all of the relaxed hair to either fall off or be trimmed off. If you have that kind of patience, go for it. :D

Wow ... 3 years is a long time, but I kind of figured as much.

Do you think the breakage was from previous relaxers or the fact that you were no longer getting them? I've heard that often hair can break off where the new growth begins because of the differences in the hair :/

What I don't understand is why would you have to chop your hair off to be 'natural'. I don't cut mine and it is longer and thicker than yours. It's pretty keep it big. =)...Unless you don't want to.

You've got a ton of hair...and if that's how your curl pattern is with relaxed hair then it'll be super easy to transition. You've got enough hair to rock super duper braid outs, bantu knot out, and wash and go's! Just keep your hair moisturized.
