i have done both microbraids and kinky twists on my own (no photos =/ ), and kinky twists are significantly easier, cheaper, and take less time than micros (dunno about box braids).
i usually take my time braiding my hair, doing the outer part in one sitting, and the inside the next day. that way i can pull it in a ponytail on the first day if i have to go somewhere.
i usually redo my hair each month. i often have to redo the edges every 2 weeks.
i plait each twist for a little bit before i start twisting it all the way down. the hair i buy is this really cheap stuff ($5) whose name i can't remember but it looks really crinkly and kinky and is already separated. idk if the cheap synthetics damage my hair at all but my hair always grows when i put them in.
I have no patience to braid my hair, I understand about the African salons, my first time getting braids I got kinky twist and I lost two chunks of my edges because they did them so tight. I do have them do cornrows so that I can do crochet braids myself, but yep yep. Check youtube lots and lots of instructional videos.
Here is a photo of my crochet braids, they are easy to do.
