Can stress cause breakage?

Aug 17, 2010 22:45

Lately my hair has been thinning/breaking a lot.  It went from almost collar bone length to barely shoulder length and I have no idea why. I get relaxers about every 8 weeks. I haven't used heat in my hair in months. I think the last time I used heat was in May.  I've done a protein treatment and I deep condition regularly. The only thing I can ( Read more... )

it doesn't sound like it should be. i've heard of stress causing someone's hair to thin gradually or even to lighten, but never to actually break. when is your hair breaking? when you comb it out while it's wet, or what? and does your stylist pull your relaxer through ever?

it breaks basically whenever i touch it. when ever i comb it in the shower all i get is a bunch of hairs everywhere. if i ever try to comb it or brush it, it breaks. i can't touch it without it breaking.
nope, she doesnt pull my relaxer through.

maybe it's my diet...maybe i should eat more protein? idk. i really have no idea what's going on here.

Stress DOES make hair fall out... churel August 18 2010, 03:34:03 UTC
You shouldnt do a protein treatment no more than every 6-8weeks, too much protein actually dries the hair out, which makes it break. Make sure you're properly adding moisture after the protein trtment. Deep condition atleast twice a week, and start taking biotin.

"too much protein actually dries the hair out"

*gasps* I use one every week because my deep conditioner is also a protein treatment. Should I stop?

Everyone's hair is different. I say no one knows your hair more than you do. So, if you don't notice any excessive (sp?) drying out of your hair, or any breakage, or more hair in the cmob/brush than usual, in my honest opinion, I would say you're fine.

But I will also say, that I NEVER knew you could OVER CONDITION your hair. Isnt that crazy? But its so true. My biggest thing was leaving deep conditioners in all night, and when I rinsed, I didnt feel like I got the full benefit. Problem was, I was over conditioning my hair. Which can be just as bad as not conditioning enough.

Your hair is beautiful.

I'm trying to stretch my relaxers a little more each time.

Do you have any particular vitamins in mind?

Thank you!

What relaxer do you use now? How are you able to stretch your relaxers for so long?
