They were originally protesting that twenty or thirty local businessmen were accused of belonging to some extremist cult and imprisoned in Andijan under extrememly questionable circumstances....I don't think they have "innocent until proven guilty" there. The legal system is pretty much a joke...but anyway, then I think it just snowballed, with people jumping on board to complain about their less-than-stellar standard of living.
Now to be fair, the protesters freed prison inmates and took some officials hostage, but gunning down children might have been a slight overreaction. The UN is pressuring Karimov for an investigation, but he's being a dick, of course.
