I think they knew about the importance of the sword because Harry told Ginny that Dumbledore left it to him? Maybe?

I cried so hard when Harry accepted it. Not as hard as I cried when Dobby died, but pretty hard.
For the Epilogue, the reason I don't like it is because it's a little too fluffy. I mean, none of the series has been fluffy, and while I'm glad all the characters seem to have a happy ending, it just... doesn't fit, to me. I didn't like the naming of the kids, at all. I mean, Albus Severus doesn't flow at all, and having siblings named James and Lily squicks me a bit. I'm not 'zomg incest ewww' but it just doesn't feel right. I would, however, like more information. Haha. That's not the reason I disliked the Epilogue, but it would be nice to know a bit more... I am pleased with Neville's future, though. I hope he's head of Gryffindor, now. :)
