If you haven't read the following I recommend Garth Nix's Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen. Also, Gregory Maguire's Wicked and Son of a Witch. Also, I don't know if you'd like Anne Rice's stuff, but the Vampire Chronicles are great. If you're interested I can give you a list of all of those, there's a ton of them.
Oh yeah, I love Garth Nix. He's recently done a new series (Keys to the Kingdom) that I want to read, even though it's a bit young for my tastes (about a 12 year old, I think).
Yeah, I really need to get off my butt and finally read Wicked.
Anne Rice sounds great... you can give me a place to start and I bet I could go from there, so you don't have to list everything!
Okay so the first book is Interview with the Vampire. I've read it twice (once when I was too young to really understand it) and I'll be honest- it was hard to get through. The movie (with Brad Pitt & Tom Cruise) I think does a pretty good job of covering the book if you wanted to just go right on to the second one. Anyway, after the first it's The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the Body Thief, Memnoch the Devil, The Vampire Armand, Merrick, Blood and Gold, Blackwood Farm, and Blood Canticle. I haven't finished Blackwood Farm or read Blood Canticle myself (partly because I'm sort of sad that the series ended I don't want to finish, lol). There's also "New Tales of the Vampires" which are Pandora, and Vittorio the Vampire. I haven't read Vittorio but I liked Pandora. So yeah, that's it.
hah, so given your tastes this will be incredibly unhelpful. i've been on a huge milan kundera kick--the unbearable lightness of being is a must read in adult fiction and life in general.
i'm sure you've read the golden compass series by philip pullman? my friend also copied me some trippy chapters from the age of wire and string (i forget the author), which is the only scifi/fantasy i've touched and can think of in a while.
Well, I read just about anything! I just used to shy away from reality-based fiction because I thought reality was bad enough. :) Anything that is pretty thought provoking is always a plus, though.
