These are not my boys (oh so unfortunately).
It’s his birthday and he can’t even justify his not playing by saying that he’s sitting on the bench. He’s nothing more than a fan for this match. He’s watching it all closely, trying to ignore the sting of just watching and of not succeeding.
(He wishes that he didn’t secretly wish they would lose so he’d feel better, so he’d feel wanted.)
It’s a dry game and then there’s the burst of excitement as Steven’s ball flies into the goal. Xabi grits his teeth and bites his tongue and all he can see is the grin gracing Steven’s face.
