I think with the size of the Sohma family, the 'cousin' concept becomes a little loose anyway. Though that could just be me.

Well, I figure in Haru's mind the Sohma family is composed of Jyuunishi and cousins. I don't think Haru's the type to go memorizing in what way exactly he's related to Rin, Yuki or Momiji, no. ;P

And now I'm awake and actually understand what you were getting at, heh. Yeah, I think, strictly legally, the relationships between the Sohmas are perfectly valid. If you want to consider the Sohma compound as one big household, the line becomes a little blurry. It's canon that the whole compound sometimes acts as one household (e.g. the compound as a whole gets ready for New Year celebrations, and Akito is the Head of the whole family and represents them all, which I forgot to note yesterday).

But if you didn't want to consider the compound as one household, then that'd be a valid interpretation too. Of the Jyuunishi who live in the Main House, only Kagura and Rin (and Kureno and Akito, heh), live under the same roof. A case could be argued for Hatori and Momiji; but as far as I can tell, it seems Momiji lives on his own with servants tending to him, and regularly gets visits from Hatori and his father ( ... )

Yeah-- they're really a clan to me, and then the Jyuunishi are special, but that's not just a family thing it's a shared-experience thing. It's very old school, in a weird way.

I never actually thought that the Jyuunishi (with the obvious exceptions!) were related closely enough to be called cousins. I know I used to joke around and say that Hiro and Kisa were something like fifth cousins twice removed, which doesn't really make them related at all, but they just share the same last name.

It did, however, lead to all sorts of incest jokes. ;D

HEH. Oh, definitely. Like I said to Renet up there, it's not so much incest as endogamy. But obviously I, as player, have no problem making cousincest jokes and playing with the notion that Fruits Basket is a series about incestuous deviants; otherwise I wouldn't have made that post. XD

It occurred to me as I was playing in that post, though, that while the laptop had joked around, Haru just didn't feel the inclination to play along, and I wanted to explain why. The disinclination to play along is Haru's, not mine.

The reason it didn't happen is that the people who went, "ooh! kinky!" were Cal and Swift, campers that Haru is not at all inclined to tell, "YES! I am dating my cousin and it's sinful! Chastise me, you big strong man." I think that mental picture broke my brain a little. Of the people who know, Norma is a little uncomfortable but tries to hide it, Haruhi doesn't give a flying fuck, Sora has his own shit to deal with and I suspect Naminé would let Haru get away with murder as long as he wasn't murdering the KH OT6. Sanzo ( ... )

...ouch. I really wish you hadn't shared that mental image, it is very difficult to type when your brain has started to come out your nose. Wrecks the keyboard.

As for River and her opinion, from what I know of her canon and stuff (and the fact that she canonically wants to marry her brother) I don't think that the fact that the Sohmas are related and that's a taboo even registers with her. After all, mindreader and all that. You'd have to ask River's player, but I'm not sure that the Sohmas particularly register to River - I know that Kisa didn't really when I was playing her.

Haha. WELL, KEEP THOSE BRAINS IN A JAR, that's what the Egyptians did!

[nods] Yeah, I didn't think they'd register to her, seeing how they don't really have that much contact. It was worth noting, though, since she's another person who knows they've started dating again. . . .And, of course, now I think it would be insanely funny if a priest accidentally married Simon and River ala Arrested Development.

....Hey, there are actual numbers for the amount of Sohmas. How did I miss this? This is good to know.

And I love you forever for typing all of that out. ♥

♥♥ I actually forgot to expand on the role of Akito within the family, but it was late and it just flew out of my mind. I'd forgotten we get actual numbers for the amount of Sohmas myself. That will teach me to stop making up random crap, because I'm certain that Haru's said in camp once or twice that the Sohma compound houses 500 people. F-fail.

I'm pretty sure I've done the same thing myself, so at least you are not alone there. >.>

One day I will make a list of stuff that I've made up about Haru and I shall call it squishy, and it shall be mine, and it shall be my squishy. Like the divination thing, and the My Little Pony stuff. And that stuff about baby cows. I'm awesome. Except when it comes to HTML, apparently.

I think George Michael would rather Maeby wall him. She totally wears the pants in that relationship.

♥ for this nice, long write-up! Now I won't have to go back and re-read about exactly how the Sohma complex is organized, so having this helps me!

And yes, Momiji's dad owns several buildings. And I always thought that Momiji sortakinda lived on his own as well so I feel comforted knowing someone else thinks that way too!
