Back when I worked in PC games ( the sublime Bethesda Softworks ), the hardcore gamer crowd thumbed their noses at MYST. "it's not really a game", they'd deride. Meaning it wasn't a first or third person shooter, RPG, or strategy game. It did, however, wildly oustell almost every other "game" for years. Thus is because people outside the gamer demographic enjoyed it (it was also one of the coolest uses of CD-ROM technology. Gamers just didn't get it.
