People like to forget that racism still exists in 2010, but every once in a while there is a ridiculously harsh reminder. That this took place only a few feet from me is about as real as it gets. It's a very WASP-y town (to the point where I even faced a degree of prejudice in school for being half Italian), and I'm not entirely surprised, but definitely still sickened.
Indeed. It's classified as a hate crime, which should yield severe punishment. Police were patrolling back and forth on my street (which is a dead end) for at least an hour afterward, so it's nice to assume that hopefully this won't be taken lightly. The family was also instructed and granted formal permission to paint over the graffiti, for lack of a better word, after pictures were taken for evidence. Hopefully this work will actually lead somewhere.
