I love The Umbrella Academy. It's mostly Gabriel Ba's artwork that has me in awe, but Gerard Way's story-telling is fantastic as well.
I'm also getting into Young Avengers, but I'm bit slow at reading it, because it's just so "classic superhero" and I'm not used to that sort of thing. Too many plot-lines and characters to follow and all those secret identity issues... Lots of work to comprehend.
As far as non-superheroes, I love Fables. Twisted fairytales have always interested me and I was incredibly happy to have found that series.
Also: Dykes to Watch Out For and Fun Home both by Allison Bechdel.
Also also: Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Dave McKean, which is completely amazing in every way. In it, all the villains take over Arkham and hold everyone hostage, until Batman commits himself...because they tell him that he's as "crazy" as they are. They then proceed to psychoanalyze him while taking him on a tour of the asylum. With the Joker as his guide. IT IS CRACK. GORGEOUS GORGEOUS CRACK.
ahahaha omg yesssss The Joker in Arkham Asylum is amaaaazing!!! Did you read in the production notes/character sketches in the back that originally they were gonna have him wearing this little black dress the whole time??? I AM ALL ABOUT THAT! In my head, that's totally what he's wearing anyhow :)
And I hear ya about Dykes to Watch Out for! I work at a bookstore too (or, I usually do. I'm traveling right now! But I had to special order it because we didn't carry it at all!)
My current favorites seem to change pretty often, I've been on a graphic novel kick for so long! But some favorites;
Morning Glories Young Liars Transmetropolitan the Flight and Pop Gun anthologies Bone Mouse Guard Cairo by G Willow Wilson Pretty much anything by Adrian Tomine Black Hole by Charles Burns (his art work is INCREDIBLE).
I really don't read comics all that often (maybe one or two graphic novels a year, if I'm lucky) but one I fell completely in love with this year was Baby's in Black by Arne Bellstorf. It's about Stuart Sutcliffe and Astrid Kirchherr and it's just thoroughly beautiful. So, even if you're not into the Beatles pre-Beatles' days (or them at all) I don't think it matters. It's a lovely graphic novel.
I also like Ghost World (so predictable) and quite enjoyed Lost at Sea by Bryan Lee O'Malley (but still haven't read Scott Pilgrim).
