Whatever (and if) you may have thought about Sun Microsystems, I never met anyone who hated them. They were always a hardware company, making microcomputer servers that drove the fledgling Net from its humble beginnings. This is not a Linux problem. It's a problem caused by a particular hardware vendor (Sun Microsystems) being aquired by another company (Oracle Inc.) Ubuntu is in really in no danger.

Ah, Okay thanks! My confusion lies in that I thought Linux was developed under Sun's aegis, but I am clearly in error. My bad.

The one that has people twitching is something called MySQL, which is a database system that runs a huge percentage of websites. There is a web deployment target platform called LAMP which is Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP and its used all over the place. Oracle has MySQL now and there are a lot of people sweating about it and looking for a replacement. Probably end up with something called Postgres, so LAMP becomes LAPP...
