On Obama's Peace Prize

Much is being said today about Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize today; consensus seems to be that it's too early, that he hasn't done enough, at least not yet, to warrant the award.

All this seems to be predicated on one critical miscalculation: that Obama's accomplishments are somehow limited to his accomplishments as US President. Here's the ( Read more... )

BRAVO!

I have criticisms of Obama, as I do of any president, or policy-maker. I think I should, because it's important to have and informed opinion in a democratic society. However, I agree that having a world-view is a seriously important perspective. That perspective is one that I think a lot of Americans give too little credence. Since the US a worldly "superpower," it is not just us that is effected by our president. I am damn sure that most of the rest of the world has reason to breathe a sigh of relief, and applaud the actions and direction Obama has taken. This gesture, of the Nobel Peace Prize, should make us ALL very happy. It means that we're in the worlds good graces again.

This is a good thing for this country, a very good thing.

It just seems like manipulation. You'd think they'd wait till the next election, though - but I think it still has an effect in attempting to raise his popularity.

6am yesterday - I'm pretty sure - Obamma and me: "For WHAT?"

Totally focused on this yesterday and forgot they were blowing up the moon, until a student asked me about it.

The Nobel Peace Prize is not a lifetime achievement award. It is not a prize designed to give every political faction a nice warm fuzzy feeling about it's honoree. It doesn't have to be a pat on the back for a job well done, though it has been of late (until this year, perhaps ( ... )
