I live less than 1/4 mile from where the EF-5 tornado hit in North Alabama on April 27. I posted this journal of my experience of the tornado and its aftermath on my facebook account, where cathshaffer saw it and urged me to repost it here. I know I've been reading these . . . it's just that almost all possible commentary (beyond "Thank heavens you're all right!") seems trivial by comparison.

It's starting to look like this year is going to be The Summer of the Tornadoes, though. My poor brother, who's come up from Texas to stay with us for a while during the time he's waiting for his 401K and his retirement from Macy's to kick in† . . . he leaves Tornado Alley and heads to New England just in time to be greeted by tornadoes in Springfield MA and St. Johnsbury VT.

†Furniture sales had gotten so poor, and the cost of his commute had gotten so high, that he literally could not afford to keep the job.

"Thank heavens we're all right" has pretty much been MY reaction, too!

I think rising gas prices and declining real wages are going to make a LOT of jobs too expensive to keep :-( It's bad out there.
