One year we were so poor that we had a newspaper-themed birthday party for one of my kids. Crafts included making and decorating the following: newspaper hats, swords made of small paper plates with cardboard "blades" inserted in them, a constructing a backdrop for the "sword fights" made of scenes on a length of kraft paper with newspaper trees. there was cake, there were gifts, and all the six-year-olds had a blast.
At young ages like your daughter's, all kids want to do is feel loved and like they were thought about - and have fun. You did great.
