CHARACTER:
Name: Shiratama/Kurookano Shijima
Age: Immortal...? (looks like a young teenager around 13-14 when in Human form)
Series: Nabari no Ou
Species: Cat/Human (Originally a cat, but can turn into a human in canon; reverse for Neo)
Gender: Female
Occupation: house pet, student at the local high school (when in human form)
Point of canon to be drawn in: chapter 41
Preferred level: Terra
Appearance: As a cat, she is Shiratama: a regular white cat with golden eyes that look strangely human. As a human, Shijima is a tiny, thin girl (stands 139cm, weighs 30kg) with big, bright eyes and long white hair. She would be seen wearing her Alya Academy uniform and would always slouch and show indifference or disinterest. Don't let that fool you, however, while she looks this way, she is very attentive to her surroundings and is very observant and insightful. Ah, she's also flat-chested and looks younger than what her real age is.
Personality: First and foremost, Shiratama is a cat. She is independent, straightforward and knows what she wants and would go through great lengths to get it. Shijima is rather blunt, and would tell you your flaws or whatever she thinks of you in your face, and wouldn't have regrets about it. She probably wouldn't even say sorry if she hurt your feelings. She would fight for what she believes in and has not a care in the world. Shijima retains most of her cat-like attitudes as a human. She would do things if she has to, but would lose motivation if it does not interest her. She would rather laze about and do whatever it is that she wants than do something that would not benefit herself. In a way, she is also selfish and hates it when things do not go her way. Shijima is also secretive and would hide her real plans under an elaborate scheme. Chances are, she knows more than she lets on. But you don't know that. As a cat, though, she's as prissy, stubborn and as curious as any other cat.
Abilities: One of Shijima's best kept secrets is one of her abilities: She cannot die. As a result of an experiment, Shijima, who was once cat, can turn into a human for a period of time. A side effect of this is her immortality. With her immortality is her ability to regenerate and heal faster than a normal human being. As human, she retains all her abilities as a cat, although to make up for her tail for balance, she uses a cape. Shijima is flexible and well-balanced. Instead of using her fingernails as a weapon, she has a special claw that she wears. Her teeth are also sharp, even as a human, and can bite through flesh easily. She's also exceptionally good at hide and seek, though it probably has something to do with her having a cat's heightened senses more than anything. Because she's small and flexible, she can fit through tiny spaces without trouble. One of her greater abilities is observation, and she is very perceptive about her surroundings. Being an observer after all is one of her purposes.
History: During the Edo Period, a man, a doctor, possessed a secret and forbidden technique that lets the user do anything in his power (if he could survive the flow of raw energy and massive amounts of knowledge, that is), the Shinrabansho. With the power to do whatever he wanted, he began experimenting, trying to find out the secrets of life, death, of immortality. He experimented on animals, on humans, on whatever he laid his hands on. He was successful. But the wisdom and power was too much for him to handle, and eventually he died. Some of his creations also withered and died, save for two. A cat and an owl. These two lived on, gaining immortality and regeneration, observing humans both in the world of Nabari, the hidden world of ninjas, and the surface world, the world of normal people. They outlived their peers and waited for the rebirth of the one who yields the Shinrabansho so that they may remove the curse that was placed on them and finally be able to rest in peace. Cat and Owl lived separately, Shiratama living with a family as a house pet, observing generations after generations, while Owl lived as a human, entering families as an adopted child.
Centuries later, the two of them grow tired of living, not wanting to experience the pain of losing those important to them over and over. Still, they live on, observing humans, waiting for the chance that they could use the Shinrabansho to end their existence. And then finally their chance came. The Shinrabansho appeared in a member of the family Shiratama was living with in the ninja village of Banten, and the Cat and Owl took this chance to rid themselves of their immortality. But there was one problem. The Shinrabansho disappeared and their memories of that instance were erased. Every ninja in the world of Nabari who sought the Shinrabansho at that time had their memories erased, most likely the work of the Shinrabansho itself. Still, Shiratama and the Owl did not give up. They knew that the Shinrabansho had been awakened.
Ten years later, Shiratama and the Owl discover that the new 'owner' of the Shinrabanshou is none other than Rokujo Miharu, who Shiratama lives with as a pet, and has been since time immemorial (pun not intended). Shiratama sticks closer to Miharu, observing, listening, gathering as much information she can. There was one thing that was obvious: the World of Nabari was changing, and Shiratama would be there when it happens.
Shiratama disappears from Miharu's side for a while, after collecting sufficient data. She travels to the village of Kouga where she takes on the form of Kurookano Shijima, a student of the Special Studies Division at Alya Academy, the front of Kouga Village. Shijima gains the trust of the village's leader and the head of the Academy, Sirius Hashiva, and is entrusted with their Kinjitsusho, the Daya, a book containing medical secrets and taboo techniques developed by the Kouga ninjas over the centuries. Now, Sirius was one of the humans Shijima has ever gotten close with. Other than the Rokujo clan from Banten, Sirius Hashiva was the only other human Shijima closely observed, which is most likely why he trusted her with the book of Daya when she reappeared to become a student at Alya Academy. Sirius Hashiva is one of the very few people who know about Shijima's immortality, a curse given by the Shinrabansho.
She meets Miharu again, who this time, has joined the ninja group Kairoushuu, and is taking part in a youth conference hosted by the Kouga nin at Alya Academy. Kairoushuu's goal was to steal the Daya from Kouga, but the Kouga nin had different plans. Cue a night of battles, where Shijima fights against Miharu and Yoite, the mysterious Kairoushuu nin who uses the forbidden technique Kira, provoking them both. In the process, she loses one of her arms but doesn't think much of it, even going as far as commenting that it would grow back. One of the Alya students injure Yoite so badly that Miharu calls on the help of the Shinrabanshou. Not being able to fight back, Shijima disappears to restore her energy. She appears again, much later, when everything has calmed back down, seemingly attaching her fallen arm back on.
At the end of the day, the conflict with Kouga is finally resolved. Sirius Hashiva, who has already weakened with sickness and age and from all the excitement of being held hostage, dies and keeps Shijima's secret with him. Shijima passes on the book of Daya to Rokujo Miharu, saying that it was the will of Sirius, and later on has a talk with the Owl, who turns out to be Aizawa Kouichi, a friend of Miharu's from Banten. She relays to him all her observations regarding the whole incident, telling him about what she knew from observation, and that, in exchange for keeping the Daya safe, she would observe "what is important to people."
And so life seemingly goes back to normal. The Front World, a world oblivious to the workings of the world of Ninjas, or Nabari, goes on as if nothing out of place is ever happening. Of course, it is very much different in Nabari. Shijima goes back into her cat form, staying in Banten and close to the Owl, Aizawa. Aizawa reveals their secrets to two other people related to Miharu, Thobari Durandal Kumohira, the only person with memories of the time the Shinrabansho first appeared in Banten, and Shimizu Raimei, a friend of Miharu's who swore to do anything to help Miharu. Shiratama is a little skeptic about Aizawa's move to reveal their secrets and their plans to Thobari, but they have plans to make Miharu use the Shinrabansho without going berserk like the other people who had been possessed by the Hijutsu. In the meantime, they would continue to observe and wait for their turn.
False memories: Kurookano Shijima is an experiment created in the now-abandoned laboratories in the Abyss as a genetic experiment, one of the many attempts to cross-breed humans with animals-- in Shijima's case, a cat. Kidnapped as a toddler, she was taken to the depths of Abyss to be poked and prodded, cut up and sewn back together. It was a miracle she survived, really. But there she was, one of the few successes of the underground labs. A side effect of her genetic manipulation, Shijima can regenerate or heal faster than normal humans. She can still feel pain, inflict deep wounds and break every bone in her body, but she would still be fine as her body would heal itself and restore it back to normal. If Shijima is immortal or not has yet to be discovered, but she has escaped death a number of times already. Another side effect of her genetic manipulation is that she can shift her appearance into a cat. Of course, life down in the laboratories of the Abyss isn't really a walk in the park. Shijima learned to fend for herself, fashioning a pair of sharp, metal cat-claws, and escaped the labs, even before the more grotesque monstrosities created there threw a fit and killed everyone else.
Shijima stayed in her cat form and traveled around the city, sneaking between Abyss and Terra, scavenging for food and even hunting down rats-- she didn't really mind, she was part cat after all, and everything could be food. One day, when she was hungry and couldn't find scraps to eat, she was lucky enough to be found by a kind old woman, who took her in her home, gave her a can of cat food to eat, and put a flea collar around her neck. The next thing Shijima knew was that she was brought to a vet for a flea bath and some rabies shots-- which were not very appreciated, she HATED the smell of hospitals and medicine and drugs and needles-- and was now being called Shiratama. She had half the mind to escape the place, but hey, she got free food and a nice, comfortable pillow in the old lady's house to sleep on, and she was far, far away from the laboratories in the Abyss, what more could she ask for, right? And her grandson wasn't that bad. If only he came back home...
