"Now I can't be a man no more, now I got to deal with THIS shit."

I get so tired of the media's most popular, intelligent, and supposedly open-minded personalities -- news personalities -- going on and on about how fat Rush Limbaugh and Michael Moore are. It's not that they aren't, it's just that I have trouble seeing how that has anything to do with their politics or their ideals. I'm just not getting it.

Unfortunately "fat people" is still on the dwindling list of acceptable targets in our society. And that's just wrong. Yet I don't see a way out of it without a massive change in the media. :-\

I think it was liberal columnist/cartoonist Ted Rall who said that fat people and Asians are the only two minorities left in American society that people publicly mock.

First of all, thanks for writing this. I usually don't throw in comments when I'm a week behind, but it needed saying.

And now, I'm going to wag my finger at you a little. Sorry. But fat people and Asians are far from being the only two minorities left in American society that people publicly mock. There are people who are "too" thin. And Latin@s. And little people. I'll stop at three.

(EDIT: And I do realize you're just quoting Ted Rall. Hence the finger-wagging being very light.)

i think it's a shame that it's perceived as okay to marginalize ANYONE based on some random characteristic.

i like to keep my hate specific and action based - as in rush being a windbag full of spurious data or a raging pyschopathic conservative.

the fact that someone is *insert characteristic* is not sufficient cause for me to pick on them. if it were, i'd have no friends, since just about everyone that i know belongs to some group or another with a bunch of inappropriate jokes attached.

Among some circles of media, "political punditry" is nothing more than a windbagged insult-fest with no insight whatsoever.

yes, and i shall hate on those whining dumbasses for that exact reason. dumb is dumb is dumb. has nothing to do with anything else.

It's possible having a thin President has something to do with this issue gaining new awareness... but I remember too well how Rhodes Scholar Bill Clinton was marginalized as a fat, stupid, inbred hillbilly, because he was from Arkansas and ate at McDonald's. (Don't even get me started on the class and region prejudice that goes on in this country.)
