Arizona gently tossed the Richardson onto the drapes and refocused on her incision. She ran through each part of the procedure like a pre-flight checklist. She nodded to herself, if the liver laceration wasn't severe enough removing the gallbladder wouldn't be necessary. She reached her hand out and immediately felt the familiar shaft of the mayo scissors in her palm. The fascia needed to be divided every so slightly.
She waited for a split second before Karev placed the large Deaver in place to increase her visibility. With this team surgery flowed seamlessly. These were the moments that reminded her why she had let her life be consumed by her work in the past. She would never give up what she had outside of her profession but these were the times she knew without a doubt that she was born for this.
She didn't even have to look up to know that Callie was in the gallery doing her sodoku. It was a little ritual they had developed, a way for them to be together without being in the same OR. It was comforting in its regularity. Little things like that all strung together is joined their lives like a line of suture. The more their lives blended, the more the individual strands were pulled taught and the past buried beneath to form a perfect closure.
The field flooded with blood and before she could glace up it was being suctioned away to allow her visualization of the source. Suture was in her hand almost before she asked. This is what made emergency abdominal surgeries so exciting to perform. There was catastrophe around every corner. She ligated the vessel and moved on, clearing the field of blood with suture and a lap sponge.
"Get the 2-0 chromic ready," she said. She explored the omentum and readied for closure of the laceration. With a blunt liver needle she sutured the lac closed, laying the omentum over with its vascularity intact, including it into the closure. Once the needle was handed back, she started her plan for closure of all of the layers of the surgucal wound.
It was then that she gave herself a moment to look up into the gallery and give a secret smile behind her mask. Callie was turned talking to a second year resident whose name escaped Arizona's mind.Callie was gorgeous in an unintentional way, like genetics just fell over itself at the chance to create someone of incomparable allurement. Then again, Arizona considered herself a little biased. Callie turned back around and gazed into the OR. Her eyes caught Arizona's and grins spread across their faces simultaneously. It was only a moment but they were each lost in the grasp of silent communication.
"Dr. Robbins," Karev said. He waited till she had snapped out of her reverie and focused on him. "Do you want me to close up so you can, uh... leave?" She blushed under her mask. It was rare for her to loose her concentration in the OR but she found since Callie had come into her life it happened on a more regular basis. It wasn't a fact she was proud of but it might be good for her in a way she had never imagined.
"Yeah," she said, nodding as she surrendered her instruments and stepped away. She trusted Karev to do a good job and any chance to practice, even closing, was a good experience for him. "You sure," she asked before scrubbing out.
"I've got this", he replied. He was already closing the peritoneum as she pulled off her gown.
He was right, he had this and even though a little twinge of guilt entered her consciousness she couldn't wait to get into the hall. She washed and rinsed her hands quickly and excited the scrub room. There she was greeted by the sight of her wife strolling toward her wearing a knowing grin. Her dimples deepened as she smiled.
"Lunch," Callie asked nonchalantly.
"Sure... I've got a little time," Arizona replied. She leaned in and gave Callie a brief peck before they both turned and headed for the elevator. It was going to be a good day.
