Sungmin carefully adjusted his hair in the mirror, tilting his head to the side to make sure there were no blemishes on his face. It was so much easier in high school, Sungmin thought to himself. There he had been carefree, and not afraid to be himself. But here he was scared. He was scared of what the other university students may think. The university that Sungmin went to was a Christian university, where rich conservative parents sent their children to get a good education and stay away from sin. The students were just like their parents. They were so focused on trying to be perfect that they didn’t even see their own greatest sin: that no one is perfect, and it’s wrong to pretend you are. They tried to free the world from sin, thinking that it was the best Christian thing that they can do. Not thinking about the biggest sin they’re committing.
Right now, the gay population of the world was their biggest concern.
On the outside, Sungmin was just like them. He’d sit attentively in church service, and quietly listen to the preacher discuss how being gay was a sin. How the only relationship there may be is one between a man and a woman. They said it was disgusting. Two men being together, that is. They said that the gays should go get treatment to be cured. As if it was a disease. The people that went to the Academy were so bad that if you went out, people would automatically assume you were going to try and preach to them about the Bible.
Sungmin went to this school for only one reason: his mother.
She suspected him of being gay because of some of the tendencies he had. So, she thought her son could be saved if he went to this school.
A boy named Kim Heechul ruined her plans.
Sungmin’s only real friend at this school was Heechul (who thankfully was also his roommate). Heechul had figured out Sungmin’s secret the minute he walked into the door.
Sungmin’s mother took one look at Heechul and knew that there was no way he wouldn’t try to fill her son’s head with “evil thoughts”. After all, only followers of the devil dyed their hair red.
“It’s nice to meet you.” She said in cheery voice, but underneath you could hear the tone laced with disgust.
Before she left she had told her son not to listen to anything the boy said, that he was surely bad news.
“So,” Heechul had smirked, “you’re mom’s a conservative homophobe, huh?”
Sungmin offered a small smile, “Kind of.”
“And she sent you here because she suspects you?” Heechul raised an eyebrow.
Sungmin had looked him up and down, “Your gay-dar is…”
“Out of this world,” Heechul became serious, “it’s the best and let me tell you, we’re the only ones in this school. If anyone else finds out they’ll spend the next four years trying to, ‘save you’.”
Sungmin sighed at the memory and picked up his bag to go on to class.
How religious the kids were at the school varied. Most kids claimed to listen to rap and hip-hop but when they heard Big Sean’s song “Dance” they started screaming about all the sin. None of the students did anything that was considered “unholy”. The deeply religious kids were the ones that Sungmin was scared to go anywhere near. They couldn’t stand to stand close to Heechul; it was if they thought that they would catch the sin. But, as Sungmin walked down the hall he could hear them talking about him.
“He’s gay, can you believe it?”
“Doesn’t he know it’s a sin?”
“He’ll go to hell for it.”
“I heard he doesn’t even believe in God.”
“That’s Lee Sungmin, Heechul’s friend.”
“Do you think he’s gay too?”
“He seems straight enough.”
“Does he think that the gays deserve rights?”
“I don’t know, he says he’s not into politics.”
“Has he tried to save Heechul?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you hear that new song by 4HIM?”
Sungmin sighed when he finally got to class and sat down in the back of the room next to Heechul. He still to this day doesn’t know how people found out about Heechul, but he was worried about what they would do if they found about Sungmin too.
“Hey hyung,” Sungmin said when Heechul walked into the room.
“This school is full of the most stupid people I’ve ever met.” Heechul said.
“Who?”
“That really pretty boy, Choi Siwon.” Heechul rolled his eyes; “He came up to me today and started to preach, like he’s one to talk. I’ve seen the way he looks at that kid, Kim Kibum; you know the one that goes to state? I bet they end up banging each other before mid-terms.”
“Who tops?” Sungmin smirked, ignoring the gasp from a girl that walked by.
“Siwon, of course.” Heechul smirked, “That boy is so fine he could top whoever he wanted.”
Sungmin laughed when the girls sitting in front of them stopped their conversation and gasped.
“I thought you had that other guy, what’s his name? Oh yeah, Hangeng.”
Heechul poked his tongue out and smirked, “Now that Chinaman is on a totally different level.”
“Ew, hyung,” Sungmin laughed and made a cross with his fingers, “I didn’t need to know that!”
One girl jumped out of her seat and left the room just as the teacher walked in to start the class. Heechul almost died of laughter.
When Friday rolled around Heechul made Sungmin get dressed up in tight, black skinny jeans, and a dark v-neck t-shirt. Sungmin carefully outlined his eyes with a dark smudge liner at Heechul’s demand.
Sungmin looked himself up and down in the mirror. He couldn’t lie: he looked pretty damn sexy.
“So hyung,” Sungmin asked in car, “where are we going?”
“A gay club.”
“They have those here?”
“Yeah,” Heechul said, “I know it’s hard to believe what with this being the land of the conservatives, but there are some sexy guys there. It’s actually where I met Hangeng.”
“Was it love at first bang?” Sungmin laughed.
“This fucker,” Heechul glared at him, “you must want to die tonight.”
“I’m sorry hyung,” Sungmin giggled, “is anyone else gonna be there?”
“A few kids that went to that really gay white school, SM High. Why?”
“Just curious.”
“Someone’s looking to get lucky!” Heechul cackled.
“No!” Sungmin exclaimed, “well maybe a little. But, like, legit I think I need a boyfriend.”
“No shit.” Heechul cackled and pressed the gas pedal down even more.
In the club, the volume was deafening, and the dance floor was huge.
“Hyung I’ll see you later.” Sungmin shouted, but he doubted he was heard; Heechul seemed pretty focused on shoving his tongue down some man’s throat. Sungmin hoped it was Hangeng’s.
On the floor some people were shamelessly twerking, but there was one long line of people that were grating on each other. A new song came on and Sungmin threw his hands up and began to sway his hips. He dropped low and popped on his ass on his way back up. Before he went to the Academy he had gone to YG Magnet High. They were kind of ghetto, but it was the second best magnet school in the country. But still pretty ghetto, and the girls there could shake their ass like whoa. And because he was open about his gayness there they had no problem shaking around him. One girl, Minzy, taught him some of her popping dances and he began to put what he learned to good use now.
He became lost in his own world, every once and a while someone would come up and try to dance with him, but Sungmin wouldn’t have it. He was very picky, and none of the guys came close to meeting his qualifications. They were all perverted old men that were already half-hard when they came up to talk to him.
After a while he began to get tired so went over to where Heechul was sitting with who he assumed was Hangeng and kids from SM.
“So,” one guy said, “what are a couple guys from the Academy doing at a place like this?”
“Shut up, maknae,” Heechul snapped, “we can go wherever the fuck we want can’t we?”
“Yeah, Kyuhyun!” said a kid, who to Sungmin looked ten years too young to be straddling that man like that, let alone come to a club.
“Shut up, Ryeowook.” Kyuhyun said, rolling his eyes, sipping his drink and leaning back, “and stop molesting Yesung-hyung, would you?”
“Do you have a problem with us being here?” Sungmin asked the boy and pouted, eyes wide.
He smirked slightly when he saw the man’s eyes suddenly get wider and he had trouble speaking.
“Well, I mean, um…no…um,” He nervously tried to get something, anything out. But all that came was stuttered, half-words. Why did this man have to be so damn cute? “I mean, no, not really, just, um...”
“You’re cute,” Sungmin smiled, surprising everyone at the table. “I like you. I’m Sungmin.”
Kyuhyun gulped and nervously shook the hand in front him, stuttering out his name. He almost passed out when the man in front of him smiled.
Kyuhyun’s eyes never left Sungmin for the rest of the night. He couldn’t believe that someone could be so cute and innocent, but so…not cute and innocent at the same time…
Somewhere around two thirty another person decided to try and dance with Sungmin. Even from his distance Kyuhyun could see the hard-on this man had. It stood straight up at attention. Sungmin tried to push the man away, but he was persistent. Kyuhyun stood up and walked over to Sungmin, wrapping a protective arm around the smaller and gave a meaningful glare to the old pervert.
“Thank you,” Sungmin said when the man left.
“No problem.” Kyuhyun said, a little awkwardly.
“Hey, will you stay with me in case someone else comes?” Sungmin was practically dripping ageyo, and Kyuhyun couldn’t refuse.
Kyuhyun can’t dance. He was tall and lanky and out on the dance floor he looked plain awkward. That’s why he tended to stay at the bar when he went out to clubs. More than a couple times he wanted to go and sit back down, but Sungmin kept him there.
After a while Heechul came up, half-drunk talking about how he and Hangeng were going to the Academy and didn’t want to be disturbed.
“Hyung,” Sungmin cried, “where am I supposed to go?”
Heechul just laughed and stumbled over to Hangeng, kissed him messily and left the club.
“What the fuck!” Sungmin shouted, “I have nowhere to go!”
“Why not stay with me for the night?” Kyuhyun suggested.
Sungmin looked up at him with narrowed eyes.
“No!” Kyuhyun exclaimed, realizing what it sounded like, “I didn’t mean anything by it! I actually live with my hyungs, Donghae, and his boyfriend Hyukjae. We have a spare bedroom, that you could stay in for the night, and I-”
Sungmin smiled, “Thank you, Kyuhyun, but I wouldn’t want to burden you, we just met. I’ll just call a couple of friends that I went to high school with.”
“Okay, but give me your number and text me if you change your mind.” Kyuhyun said, taking his phone out.
“Okay, thank you, Kyu.” Sungmin smirked when he saw Kyuhyun blush at the new nickname.
It was cold outside of the club, so Kyuhyun put his jacket around Sungmin’s shoulders.
“So,” Kyuhyun broke the silence, wanting to ease the tension, “what made you decide to go to the Academy?”
“My mother,” Sungmin sighed, “she found out I was gay, and made me go there to try and be saved.”
“So it had nothing to do with your faith?” Kyuhyun asked, trying to figure Sungmin out.
“No,” Sungmin sighed again, “I believe in God, and I believe in what He says. But, I don’t believe that people know what they’re talking about when they quote the Bible the way they do.”
“What do you mean?”
“Kids at school have supposedly found passages in the Bible that say two men can’t love each other. That if they do we must work to find the cure.” Sungmin frowned. “I’m gay.” He said firmly. “I’m gay and that was fine in high school. I made friends; I got a really sweet boyfriend. We broke up because he was moving to China and I don’t do long-distance. But I made friends and I was happy. My mother couldn’t care less what I did at that school, just as long as I kept bringing home my A’s. But, she must have seen me with Henry, my ex, because she made me go to the Academy. Despite, my being accepted to Harvard, she said I must take the opportunity to get closer to God.”
“So what are you going to do?” Kyuhyun wondered aloud.
“I’m moving.” Sungmin said firmly. “I’m moving to Japan, and she won’t be able to stop me. I will have done everything she says, and I’ll be free. Free to do whatever I want.”
Kyuhyun nodded, “I think that’s admirable of you, Sungmin.” He turned to look him in the eye, “I wouldn’t have the courage to do that.”
Sungmin smiled, “Thank you, Kyu.”
At that moment a car pulled up in front of the club and a girl with a cute round face poked her head out and waved. Sungmin smiled and waved back, “Hey, Bom, I’ll be there in a minute!” turning back to Kyuhyun he gave him a kiss on the cheek, “Thank you, Kyu. For listening.”
“Anytime,” Kyuhyun said, a little dazed.
“Who’s that?” Chaerin smirked soon as Sungmin sat down.
“No one.” Sungmin defended, “Just a friend.”
“Boyfriend?” Minzy raised an eyebrow.
“WhooooOO,” Sandara giggled.
Sungmin rolled his eyes, but smiled a little bit. It became a full grin when he saw that he got a text from Kyuhyun.

Kyuhyun knew from that first night that there was no going back; it was love at first sight. The cute and sexy bunny-boy stole his heart.
Donghae knew immediately.
“Hyukkie!” he cheered, when Kyuhyun walked into the living room, “It finally happened! He fell in love!”
Hyukjae came in looking like a proud father, “So, who melted this cold video gamer’s heart?”
“He goes to the Academy.”
“Shit!” Donghae shouted.
“That sucks-” Hyukjae’s face fell.
“He’s gay though…” Kyuhyun smiled a little.
“Whoop!” Donghae began to dance to again, singing about how wonderful it was that Kyuhyun capable of emotion.
“How does that work?” Hyukjae asked.
“I don’t know…”
“Where’d you meet?” Hyukjae tilted his head to the side.
“At a club.”
“Did you make a move?” Donghae pressed.
“No, I-”
“Fuck!” Donghae stomped his foot, looking like a little kid that couldn’t get his ice cream, “You were at a club, why didn’t you make a move?”
“Damn, hyung, is it that time of the month already? Why you asking all them questions?” Kyuhyun laughed, and Hyukjae giggled (but he shut up real quick when Donghae glared at him), “And if you must know he asked me to dance.”
“Fuck you, Kyuhyun!” Donghae began to flail his arms, “I topped last time!” Hyukjae face palmed, “And did you dance? Please tell me you just bought him a drink!”
“I danced.”
“Fuck, Kyuhyun, you ruined it!” Donghae buried his face in his hands.
Just then Kyuhyun’s phone buzzed.

Kyuhyun pocketed his phone and looked up. Donghae had the most evil look in his eyes.
“Who was that, Kyuhyun?”
Kyuhyun cleared his throat, “Sungmin-hyung.”
“Is that the guy from tonight?” shit, Hyukjae looked pretty scary too…
“Yeah…”
“What did he want?”
“To hang out tomorrow, we’re going to see a movie together.”
“Oh really?” Hyukjae raised an eyebrow.
“J-Just as friends.” Kyuhyun has never felt this scared in his life.
“So you know what you’re going to do?” Donghae asked, grinning wickedly.
“Pay?”
“Ask him out, dumb ass!” Hyukjae shouted excitedly.
Out of fear all Kyuhyun could do is nod.
The next day Sungmin stood in front of the theater wondering how he let this happen.
**Flashback**
“Who are you texting?” Bom asked, taking a bite out of her bread.
“No one.” Sungmin muttered, blushing.
“Oooooh,” Sandara grabbed his phone and began to type into it; Minzy leaned over, grabbed the phone and typed some more into it.
“What are you doing?” Sungmin pouted.
“Nothing oppa,” Minzy smiled, giving the phone to Dara.
“Sungmin-oppa you’re going to the movies with Kyuhyunnie tomorrow,” Dara smiled, playing her own ageyo card and passed the phone back.
Sungmin grabbed the phone back and pouted, “Why did you do that?”
“Because,” Chaerin said, “we saw how he looked at you.”
“And how you looked at him.” Minzy smiled.
“How did he look at me?” Sungmin demanded.
“The same way Jiyong-oppa looks at Dara-unni.” Chaerin said; focused completely on what was on TV.
“How did I look at him?” Sungmin asked, a little surprised.
“The way Dara looks at Jiyong.” Bom said, chewing her bread; also focused on the TV.
**End Flashback**
Sungmin sighed, that’s right; he let them talk him into something that a fifty/fifty shot of actually working out…again.
Looking around, Sungmin easily found the brown mop of hair that was Kyuhyun.
“Hey,” Sungmin said, and his heart almost jumped out of chest when Kyuhyun turned around and smiled.
Damn, he thought, they were right.
“Hey, hyung,” Kyuhyun smiled, “are you ready to go in, I already bought us tickets.”
“Yeah, let’s go.” Sungmin smiled.
Sungmin had no idea what to expect, he had let Bom pick the movie for them. So he walked right into a romantic comedy in a theater filled with cute and giggly couples.
Kyuhyun shifted awkwardly in his seat when the movie began. Why did Sungmin pick this movie? They were totally surrounded by annoyingly happy couples.
“I’m sorry,” Sungmin, whispered, “I let my friend pick the movie, we can go if you want.”
If they left Kyuhyun didn’t know when he’d get another chance to sit this close to Sungmin again. No, he’d rather sit through the sap than leave.
“I’m fine with whatever you want to do.” Kyuhyun whispered back.
Sungmin smiled, “Okay, thank you, Kyu!”
Throughout the rest of the movie Kyuhyun paid no attention to it. If he was questioned on it he probably wouldn’t even be able to tell someone the hair color of the main character. Instead, he watched Sungmin, and laughed when he did. Pouted when he did. To Kyuhyun it was the best two hours he’d ever spent in his life.
After the movie Sungmin happily skipped out, “That was so cute!”
“You really liked it?” Kyuhyun laughed at Sungmin’s childish actions.
“Yes,” Sungmin fell into step next to Kyuhyun and smiled, “I especially like the part where the guy confessed. How he didn’t do anything that would potentially put her in an awkward situation, you know? He didn’t shout it in front of the whole school, he just went out with her and was honest with how he felt.”
“But they had just met, how does she know his feelings were true?” Kyuhyun asked.
“With love,” Sungmin sighed, “time doesn’t matter. All that matters is that you’re honest with each other.”
“So how would you want to be confessed to?” Kyuhyun’s hand brushed Sungmin’s.
“I don’t know,” Sungmin sighed, lightly taking Kyuhyun’s hand in his, “I guess I’d want him to treat me to something, take my hand in his, look me in the eye, tell me how he feels, and if I accept, kiss me. Nothing heavy, just sweet kisses to tell me his feelings are true.”
Kyuhyun stopped walking, and Sungmin stopped too, looking up at Kyuhyun with hopeful eyes.
Kyuhyun took a deep breath and looked Sungmin in the eyes, “Sungmin, I know it’s been short, but,” Sungmin squeezed his hand tighter, “I fell in love you the first time I saw you smile. I fell in love with your ageyo and how I can’t refuse anything you ask of me. I fell in love with your eyes, and how honest they are about how you feel. I fell in love with your laugh, and how it lights up the room. I fell in love with the way you laughed at me when we danced, but you weren’t ashamed to keep dancing with me. I fell in love with your courage. I fell more in love today, when you took my hand, and it feels so perfect. Please Sungmin,” Kyuhyun took a step closer, “tell me you feel the same way so I can kiss you.”
Sungmin smiled, “I love you, Kyu.”
Kyuhyun smiled and leaned down, softly pressing his lips to Sungmin’s. After a minute of a sweet kiss, Sungmin pulled back and rested his forehead on Kyuhyun’s. “Remember how I said I wanted sweet kisses?” Kyuhyun nodded, “I think you’re allowed to be an exception to that rule.” Kyuhyun smirked and pulled Sungmin in again, this time kissing him with all the love and passion he had.
**Four Years Later**
Sungmin smiled and looked up a the departure times listed on the big screen in the airport. The flight to Japan was scheduled to leave on time.
“Hey,” Kyuhyun came up behind him, dragging a suitcase and holding two tickets, “you got the passports?”
“Yeah,” Sungmin smiled, “you have everything?”
“Yup,” Kyuhyun stopped in front of his boyfriend, “Are you ready?”
Sungmin smiled and nodded. He was more than ready. He was going to finally be free, and he wouldn’t have to be alone. He had his Kyuhyun and that was all he really needed.
His graduation had been chaotic, as Kyuhyun had shown up and Sungmin had kissed him without fear. Without fear of his mother or other students. They were shocked at first, but most accepted it. Choi Siwon had stood up and told the school that gender didn’t matter, just that they truly loved each other. Kim Kibum had come up on stage with him, kissed him and said that they were happy so people should just accept it. Sungmin’s mother had left though; she didn’t stay to see if her son was truly happy. That would be Sungmin’s one regret, that he didn’t get the proper closure. But that didn’t matter as long as there was Kyuhyun next to him.
“Hey, Min,” Kyuhyun called his boyfriend back down to earth, “someone’s here for you.”
Sungmin turned and saw his mother walking towards them.
“What is she doing here?” Sungmin wondered under his breath.
Sungmin took a step toward his mother.
“Why are you doing this, Sungmin?” his mother asked, “Why are you running away with this boy?”
“I’m not running away,” Sungmin shook his head, “I’m going home. I’ve always loved Japan, but that’s not what makes it a home.”
“Then what does?” she put her hands on her hips.
“Kyuhyun.” Sungmin said simply, “if home is where the heart is, then wherever Kyuhyun is, is my home. Japan is just the location we picked.”
Kyuhyun smiled and wrapped his arms around Sungmin’s waist from behind him. Sungmin’s mother blinked and looked at her son. She looked at how sure he was of his plan. She saw the way Kyuhyun looked at Sungmin, with such love. No mother can bear to stand in the way of that.
“Young man,” she looked at Kyuhyun, “do you promise to take care of my Sungmin, and never make him cry?”
“Of course,” Kyuhyun said seriously.
Sungmin’s mother sighed, “Then I guess I just have one request.”
“What’s that?”
“Write often okay?”
Sungmin smiled and hugged his mother tightly. When they released each other and turned to Kyuhyun, kissing him with all the love he could put into a single kiss.
“Hey!” Sungmin’s mother shouted, “You’re going to miss your flight!”
Sungmin and Kyuhyun laughed and released each other, running through the terminal. They stopped once to wave good-bye, but quickly turned and ran onto the plane. Eager to start their new life together.
