Me: Bigotry doesn't have to be institutionalized to be an -ism.
Nutjob: YOU'RE A RACIST!Did you know I was a racist, everyone? Simply pointing out that whites can be on the recieving end of racist acts makes people racist themselves! Heck, I hadn't even used whites as my example! My initial example was black on Pacific Islander! IT STILL MAKES ME ( Read more... )

"decades of shit I went through"? How old is this person? Does she mean one decade? Two decades? LOL talk about hyperbole

Also I was like O_o when she randomly called you a racist. I didn't get that impression from you at all.

Well technically I went through "decades of shit" because my bullying started when I was THREE. But I was a rather extreme case. It's possible that she had something similar, but it would have had to be somewhat odd.

-isms are defined in a lot of places as bigotry institutionalised. I certainly use it in that manner. So in the US, for example, black people can be bigoted toward white people, but they can't be racist.

I think that's a distinction between how sociology people use the term and how everyday people use it. Most people use it to indicate "acts or beliefs that are racist" and it doesn't matter one iota if the majority of society feeds into that. And that's how I was using it, because honestly it shouldn't matter if it's government-approved hatred. It's still hatred.

From my experience, talking about racism is general is only going to lead to problem unless you are talking with extremely rational people. Part of the problem is that it is such a touchy subject to begin with, and making it worse is that most people use the phrase incorrectly to begin with. What is worse is when derivatives are created based off a faulty understanding of what racisim actually is. Throw in the internet, where everything seems to be 10 times more inaccurate and 10 time more sensitive, and well; I'm sure you know what I mean.

Regardless of who is calling you what, I don't think it is a huge deal. So some random idiot on the internet calls you a racist for pointing out that racism is a two-way street. In the end, you are correct by using rational thought, while they are still an idiot pretending to know thing that they don't actually know.

Have read a bunch of it now, this is too juicy of a topic to ignore. I might join I'll join into the conversation, if only for a little while out of boredom.

Oh man I read that. That was pretty cool. Hope she replies to it because I can't wait to see what sort of batshit she summons for it.

Also, she asked me if it hurt to have my ass so far up my backside. Those are the same thing, I pointed out, so it made no sense.
