Monday I teach. For the first time. Ever. I will stand up in front of 30 students and pretend that I know what I'm doing (even though the only training or advice I've had on teaching is "Don't worry; you'll figure it out.") The Oxford Latin Course Book is weird. It has goofy pictures. It doesn't have grammer tables to memorize. I don't know ( Read more... )

My first-year Latin teacher was new to it too - we asked stupid questions, she explained, it was all good. Plus, the Oxford illustrations get ridiculously homoerotic in places, which is always amusing.

In short: just pretend you know what you're doing, and the students will buy it. You know Latin, they don't, ergo you're in charge. You'll do great :-)

I've already found the infamous "ox" picture of page 18. The other teachers have told me that the students inevitably wonder just what that man is doing to that ox. (And come to dirty conclusions...)

Ah, see - I was thinking of the one where Quintus and Gaius are 'exercising'...with Gaius mounting Quintus from behind. And, of course, the baths scene in book 2 :-P
