WATER.

... after trying to make their own way, the boys are brought together again and reimmurse themselves in a common purpose: finding their father... and returning to their roots: saving people.

FIRE.

... trials by it. It refined their inner resolve while slowly eliminating all means of escape.

WIND.

... this is what you will become; an ill wind that blows no good and finally - invisibly - rips you both apart.

EARTH.

... now, you are both born of the world, for the world, reborn of the seen and the unseen as the First People called the Raven the creator of the universe.
"Dr. Carl Jung deemed raven symbolism to represent the shadow self, or the dark side of the psyche. I very much like this. Why? Because by acknowledging this dark side, we can effectively communicate with both halves of ourselves. This offers liberating balance, and facilitates tremendous wisdom (something the raven would be very pleased with)." - http://www.whats-your-sign.com/raven-symbolism.html

METAL.

... daddy's blunt little instruments no more, now many father figures pull them toward their destinies, the iron in the blood of the Chosen being the ultimate weapon.

Dean and Sam as the Fifth Element?

But what is it, exactly? Every culture agrees on all others but this one. Metal? Void? Space? Consciousness? Truth? Divine Light? Maybe it is all those things. It seems like there is agreement on one aspect: that to activate this element takes two energies coming into sync with one another: two of one mind to share a common purpose and bring it into being, to be both sides of the same coin.

... *shrugs*
What do you guys think?

Sidenote: this was another candidate for the title card for season five.

It's more white and elicts thoughts of the angel sword itself while referring outright to the baphomet myth of Lucifer. I can only think that they changed it because they don't really want to leave that impression of Lucifer on the minds of the audience and they'd rather it represent the heroes and their sacrifice.

Credit to screencap-paradise for 1-4 and to oxoniensis for 5. The candidate for 5 was on the early releases of the season five promos by The CW. Props to my friends for agreeing that I'm not crazy. You know who you are. ;)

...

ETA: Fans are interpreting the Enochian symbols on the boys' ribs. They include the five elements... wow, what a coincidence... ;) Check it out!
