So apparently today is "Black Friday" in the States? Who knew. Well I bet some of you knew.

I had no idea they had a day that officially started off the Christmas shopping frenzy. Why in the heck don't we have that kind of thing. Not because I want to fight some hags for a trampled glitter reindeer at a 6am sale, but because then we wouldn't have ( Read more... )

'black friday' is a derogatory term, though - it's a play on other usages of black friday, which almost always refers to a crisis, a riot, or some sort of disaster that results in multiple deaths. i was under the impression that it's only used by anti-capitalist types.

Yeah I haven't seen it on television or anything. And I am sure a large part of the Etsy community are anti-capitalist types, but so far its just being used just like we use boxing day in conversation. By stay at home moms.

Perhaps that's the origin of it, but that certainly isn't the context in which I've heard the term used. Snopes did an update just a few days ago about it:
