Once Upon a Mattress

7:00. It's cold outside, below freezing. The doors open. Earlybirds, kinsfolk, and lovers roll in. A light murmur can be heard from backstage, one of apprehension.

you don't have to do anything. i know how badly you wanted to be there. i know how hard you tried. i wish you could've been there. and i thought that you were going to pull a Joel and tell me you weren't coming then surprise me. i know that's what you wanted to do. but when you called me all choked up i knew you weren't kidding. i knew it was for real that you would not be in the audience. i felt so awful because i knew just how awful you must've felt. but believe me, it's alright. it was just a show. there will be others. it doesn't matter to me that you weren't there. because i knew that there was a boy in Rochester who loves me more than i could ever imagine and wanted so desperately to see this show because he knew how much it meant to me. you'll see pictures. and your family tried to tape it.
