I agree with this 100%, like this one girl I always was feeling like I was making the effort and she never tried. Online and in person so I did exactly what you did but I took it a step more for the online stuff. I would comment/IM the max twice on anything they did and then after that I wouldn't comment on anything else she posted unless she made an effort to contact me or comment or anything.

I do the twice thing a lot. Like inviting people to parties. I'm not gonna beg for someone to be my friend. If I invite someone twice and I feel they gave lame reasons then that's it. I'll do open invites and if they don't reply to those then I don't invite them anymore.

If your 'friends' don't actually make an effort to be a friend then they are just leaches.

Yeah that's roughly how I felt about it. I'm not someone who gets antsy just because I do IM someone first mostly, or I'm the only one that calls or offers to hang out, but if it gets to the point where the person just doesn't respond, AND never makes contact, I figure then you're just trying to tell me something. I don't even resent it. I just kind of accept it. (Doesn't mean I always like it though, unfortunately.)

I hope I'm not one of those. D: In general, I don't initiate IMs with people because I suck at conversationing.

You're "one of those" but not one of the people I was directly thinking about. Plus occasionally you send me cool links, and I appear to be in your "second family" group on LJ, so that counts. :D

Yeah. I rather think so. Friendship shouldn't be a one way street. It shouldn't even be a street! More of a hippie commune.
