I don't know if there's anything meaningful I can even say to any of this, but I am thinking of you and of this person I don't know, hoping he and his loved ones can heal together. And I don't think you should blame yourself for not doing enough. Sometimes it's true that people don't do enough, but that's when they really have the power to make everything better and they choose actively to sit on their hands. From the very limited amount that I now know about this situation with your friend, I can't imagine you had that power or made that choice.
