CHARACTER NAME: Ophelia, or Drowned Ophelia.
FANDOM: Brutal Legend
CHRONOLOGY: After Chapter 21, Before Chapter 22.
CLASS: It’s hard to argue that Ophelia is entirely evil, as her motivation during Brutal Legend is vengeance against the people who betrayed her, not the destruction of the world or overwhelming power or things like that. Without that specific ‘thing’ to hate, she’s just a bitter goth girl with really creepy powers.

The real Ophelia was a crusader for justice, wanting to free slaves and release prostitutes from bondage and things like that. Some of that will probably shine through as this Ophelia makes her way through the world. So…

Anti-hero with villainous tendancies, maybe? If she sees someone mugging a weak old woman, she’d save the woman…and probably kill the mugger.
SUPERHERO NAME: Drowned Ophelia
ALTER EGO: Ophelia

BACKGROUND:

Ophelia is a child of the ‘Age of Metal,’ a legendary time when the world was literally dictated by the concepts and imagery that currently inhabit hardcore rock and roll. Half the trees were metal, the ground could grow spikes and massive stone statues of guitars and rock bands dotted the land. A guitar didn’t just create music, but magic, a lightning strike or a firey gyser, and a rock solo might summon animals or call down an exploding blimp from the heavens.

When Eddie Riggs was teleported from the future into the ‘Age of Metal’, the first person he met was Ophelia. She had snuck and fought her way through a massive citadel infested with demons in order to recover an Axe…that Eddie had already picked up. They were pretty much trapped, with little chance of escape, when Eddie managed to build a ‘car’ out of leftover Titans relics, and they managed to escape.

The car terrified Ophelia, but she was pretty impressed with it too, and she decided to bring Eddie back to the Bladeshenge, and the human ‘army’ that was going to go to war with the demons that had taken over their world. Of course, the army consisted of only three people, Lars, his sister Lita, and Opehlia herself. And Lita didn’t trust Ophelia as far as she could throw her.

Before she was born, Ophelia’s parents had been involved in the first rebellion against the demons, a rebellion that almost succeeded except that just before they would have attacked the demons citadel, they were drawn to an ocean called the Sea of Black Tears. The sea was said to be able to lure men to it, and that drinking from it corrupted a person, giving them immense power but draining away their will to live. Ophelia was born after her mother was exposed to the tears, and so other humans didn’t trust her, believing a ‘thirst’ for the tears existed within her even though she had never consumed them herself.

This grated at Ophelia, but Lars trusted her, and now Eddie trusted her, so she did her best to continue helping with the effort to destroy the demons. With Eddie’s help, they were able to rescue and recruit slaves and soldiers willing to fight against the demons.

But Ophelia’s main goal was to free a number of women she knew from one of the demon generals, where they were being held as concubines. Unfortunately, she tried to do this on her own, and was seriously injured, but Eddie was able to save her. With Eddie’s help, they were able to free Ophelia’s friends. In fact, Eddie was a godsend to the world, unlocking ancient Titan musical powers and drawing forth ancient Titan constructs from the ground itself with the power of music.

As the war continued, Eddie and Ophelia fell in love, and shortly before their first major offensive battle, Eddie gave her a charm to signify his love and trust for her, to prove that he didn’t believe what Lita said about her. Even while this was happening though, Ophelia had begun to wonder about Eddie. He was a brilliant general and a great warrior, but he showed strength and power that were usually restricted to someone who was a demon. Could he somehow be a plant? And yet she couldn’t help but love him.

The won the battle, successfully killing one of the major generals of the demon army and Ophelia and the other humans were extatic. But before they even had time to celebrate, the Demon Emperor, Deviculus, attacked them. He ranted about how someone named ‘Saccoria’ was in the human army and he didn’t understand why, implying that whomever it was had betrayed the humans though. And then he killed Lars and began dropping demonic living bombs on the army.

Eddie and Ophelia played distraction for the rest of the army, and when they too managed to escape they found Lita waiting for them. She insisted that Ophelia must have been Saccoria, and that she had betrayed them. She was the reason Lars was dead, the reason they were forced to run and hide again. Eddie didn’t seem to know what to think, and when Ophelia couldn’t give him any real answers, he accused her of betraying them and left with Lita. What could she say? That if anyone was acting like they might be a traitor it was Eddie?

Still, she loved him, and his abandonment broke her heart. She hurled the pendant he had given her at his back, and then…started walking. She didn’t know where she was going, she didn’t care even, she just…walked and walked.

As though some power was drawing her forward, she found herself at the shores of the great underground Sea of Black Tears. She was an emotional mess by that point, full of anger and confusion and sadness, and the siren song of the ocean drew her there, promising to heal all her pain and soothe all her worry. With no where in the world left to turn…Ophelia hurled herself into it.

Perhaps sensing in Ophelia all the things that Eddie had taught her about how powerful music could be, the ocean did not simply corrupt her into a black tear creature. Instead, it drew her body down to the bottom of the sea and kept her there, sending out a copy that had all of Ophelia’s memories, all of the things she knew, and the power of the Black Tears.

This new Ophelia, ‘Drowned Ophelia’, didn’t know that she was a copy, only that she had been given a chance to get revenge on all the people that had betrayed her. She was an Ophelia free of the limitations of the previous version, who could say whatever she wanted to, do whatever she wanted to, and had been given new and amazing powers. And what she wanted more than anything was vengeance.

She called others to the sea, desperate for acceptance or power or so many other things, building an army she called the Drowning Doom. She learned to master the magical magic that Eddie had first shown her, and even learned to summon her own car from the ancient Titan magics of the world.

It was months later that she and her new army set out into the world, hunting down Eddie and Lita and their army, and she hounded them across the world, but at each major battle she found that she just couldn’t win. It was infuriating, and she was growing angrier and angrier as the days went on and she was finally forced to retreat back to the Sea of Black Tears to make her last stand.

It was just before this battle, with the ocean at her back and Eddie coming to destroy her, that she was sucked away to this new world. And here, in a sense, a weight was lifted off of her. There was no need for revenge here, because Eddie was not even on this world. No need to worry about what she would do about the demons once Eddie was gone, because there were no demons here! So who knows how she’ll turn out.

PERSONALITY:

Drowned Ophelia is in many ways a creature born entirely of heartbreak, loss, rage and vengeance. Those are not the only emotions she can feel, but they do fuel the majority of her actions. She wants revenge on Eddie for breaking her heart, she wants revenge on all the other humans in the Age of Metal for not trusting her just because of her parents. Imagine someone pushed so thoroughly to the breaking point by life, completely alone, completely devoid of a support system or anything to hope for, that they kill themselves…and then keep going.

Her primary emotional goal was revenge against Eddie while she was in the Age of Metal. Now that she has been transported somewhere else, somewhere without an Eddie or an army of Bladeshenge to hate, she’ll have to find some other thing to focus her attention on. Some of the classic Ophelia may emerge, the woman who hates slavery and prostitution and wants to ‘fix’ the world by removing its darker elements. But she’s still a creature of malice, and would probably want to remove those elements by murdering the people responsible.

She has a wicked sense of humor, a tendency towards sarcastic remarks, and absolutely adores a good ironic situation. She’s a decent leader on the battlefield, but she wouldn’t actively plan out the best place to ambush someone, and this attitude follows through in other things. She is very much a ‘look before you leap’ type.

In a sense, because of the loss she suffered in the breaking of her heart, she has a soft spot for others who have gone through similar things. A beaten wife, or a girlfriend with a cheating boyfriend will trigger more ‘normal’ emotions in her, wanting to help them, wanting to fix what is broken in them.

She doesn’t trust anyone outside of her own minions, and believes that trust itself is a weakness, allowing you to open the door to pain and suffering and love which should be avoided at all costs.

POWER:

Drowned Ophelia is a construct of the Sea of Black Tears, though she is completely unaware that she is only a copy. The original Ophelia lies sleeping at the bottom of the sea, and the currently-walking-around Ophelia is actually made up entirely of the sea itself. While she has all the necessary organs and functions that a ‘normal’ human would have, they are all driven by the Black Tears, which flow through her body (and are, in fact, created by her body) instead of blood. Despite her odd nature, she isn’t any more ‘difficult’ to kill than an ordinary person, provided you can actually get close enough to harm her. (She is killed in the game by having her black tear heart ripped out.)

Black Tears:

This substance leaks out of her, constantly evaporating into the air around her in thick black waves, and she can manipulate it, creating large balls of black liquid that she smashes down onto people, or as a means of teleportation, sinking into it in one place and emerging from the ground somewhere else. She even can create a limited number of objects from it, including a guitar, her car ‘The Hearse’, and a pair of transparent bat-like wings that allow her to fly. All of her ‘clothing’ in the game consists of Black Tears manipulated to cover her form.

The tears are extremely addicting, and grant anyone who drinks or interacts with them wonderful but terrible powers. In a sense it ‘kills’ them, except that they remain alive and might be granted the ability to survive having their limbs torn off, or to induce mind-numbing fear in anyone who they battle against. Women who wash their hair in the sea found that the hair became alive, tearing their heads from their shoulders and moving to fight in the Drowning Doom’s army. A musician who drank the tears might die only to become a ghostly organist who’s songs drain the life from people. Consuming more of the tears will even heal injuries. Despite these powers, the tears sap those who drink it of their sanity and their will to live, and they all fall under Ophelia’s thrall.

If she went the route of Villain, any henchmen she had would probably be Black Tear Drinkers.

The power of ROCK:

Thanks to Eddie teaching her, and her newfound access to the Black Tears, Ophelia can create an electric guitar out of her black tear cloud and use it to perform several magical attacks. She can cause a lightning strike, or a gout of flame to burst from the ground.

In the Land of Metal she can perform solo’s that might make a bridge collapse or rebuild itself, summon her car from the Sea of Black Tears, or call down an airstrike of twisted black tear eyeballs, but I’m not sure how to translate that into a different setting.

Appearance: While in the Age of Metal, Ophelia was able to manipulate the Black Tears to create clothing for herself, though it was somewhat rough-shod and lent itself to a bit of a skanky air. And the black tears themselves constantly swarmed up around her body in an inky black cloud. Here in this new world, she’s discovered that she can manipulate the tears to form actual, physical clothing (though it is always black) and draw the rest of it into her body, leeching the blue color from her skin and looking, for all intents and purposes, like the original Ophelia. But this does take effort, and after a while she needs to ‘let it all out’ as it were, and ends up back to being blue and creepy.

Tiny minor useless power: Soundtrack

Music is a huge part of Brutal Legends, and so its hard for me to imagine the characters existing without their background music. So I was thinking in some situations, Ophelia would just…have music playing in the air around her. It would vary depending on what she was doing and the circumstances of the action, and I’d link to each song (probably on youtube) so people know what it is.

[The video flicks to life showing the evening skyscape, lights out in the city just flicking on here and there. It shakes faintly, and seems to be moving slowly to the right, as whomever is holding the phone walks along the edge of the rooftop they are standing on. Occasionally a waft of something black and oily drifts up in front of the screen only to fade away into the air.]

My, isn’t this a fascinating place. So much like that strange future Eddie described, all this fancy technology and all these free and happy people bouncing about their little lives…

And no Eddie, and no Deviculus, and even that stupid whore Lita are all gone here…no army either, that could be an issue…still.

[Down on the street below there is the sound of a car accident, and the camera lurches forward, half-blocked by the edge of the roof but a pretty rough looking accident can be seen down on the street. Suddenly the speaking woman is laughing softly.]

Well now.

[The camera moves up to show the woman speaking, she is in her early twenties, with night black hair, and very obviously blue skin. She is smiling a rather wicked looking smile.]

Hello New World. I’ve come to play.

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:

While Ophelia’s initial reaction to this new world had been one of fascination, now that night had set in it was more one of confusion and irritation. The fact that she hadn’t actually killed Eddie before being drawn here was gnawing at her, and honestly a lot of the technology and buildings and…everything…here were rather disorienting to her.

So she had gone wandering in search of somewhere a bit more like home, and wound up in one of the cities parks. It actually reminded her more of the jungle than anything else, the trees were all green and wood, no chord trees or metal claw trees or anything normal. There weren’t even any wandering beasts.

But it was still better than being surrounded by the noise of the cars and the buildings and all the people. She’d seen more people in ten minutes than she suspected lived in the entirety of her homeland. All so happy and oblivious and happy. Ugh.

But the park was a bit better, and so she wandered through it, staying off the path and listening to the quieter sounds of nature and the soft rolling of the music that seemed to follow her around in this place. She actually liked that quite a bit, though she wasn’t really sure why it was happening.

But then she heard the scream. A woman’s voice, younger, filled with fear and a hint of pain. “Hmm.”

Blue legs carried her towards the sound, and she emerged from the trees to find a young woman wearing practically nothing being accosted by an older man wielding a knife. He slashed at her, and the woman fell back onto her rear with another scream, loud enough to make Ophelia’s teeth hurt.

Without missing a beat she marched towards them, stretching her hand out in front of her and drawing her alabaster electric guitar from the air. The woman noticed her approaching, and shouted something about needing help, but before the man could add anything Ophelia plucked three of her thick metal strings and an arc of blue lightning shot out from the instrument, crashing into the man and sending him sprawling to the ground, twitching, his weapon clattering away into the darkness.

And then it was completely silent, aside from her quiet music. The woman was staring at her in shock, though when that broke she nearly leapt to her feet, taking a nervous half-step backwards. “W-what did you…?”

Ophelia gave her a glance over and saw that she didn’t seem to be particularly injured, and then focused her dark eyes on the womans face, smiling that sarcastic smile of hers. “You should probably run, this doesn’t seem like a terribly safe place, ya know.”

The woman turned and bolted like a frightened raptor elk, and Ophelia released her guitar, letting it vanish as she turned her attention to the fallen man. Maybe he had some of that ‘money’ the people she had first spoken to told her about…

Well, only one way to find out.
