[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Ophelia, or Drowned Ophelia.
FANDOM: Brutal Legend
CHRONOLOGY: After Chapter 21, Before Chapter 22.
CLASS: It’s hard to argue that Ophelia is entirely evil, as her motivation during Brutal Legend is vengeance against the people who betrayed her, not the destruction of the world or overwhelming power or things like that. Without that specific ‘thing’ to hate, she’s just a bitter goth girl with really creepy powers.

The real Ophelia was a crusader for justice, wanting to free slaves and release prostitutes from bondage and things like that. Some of that will probably shine through as this Ophelia makes her way through the world. So…

Anti-hero with villainous tendancies, maybe? If she sees someone mugging a weak old woman, she’d save the woman…and probably kill the mugger.
SUPERHERO NAME: Drowned Ophelia
ALTER EGO: See Final Note

BACKGROUND:

Ophelia was the daughter of two generals in the Black Tear Rebellion who gave in to their lusting for the black sea of tears and ended up destroying themselves. She teamed up with the surviving humans (although only some of them trusted her) and attempted to take back their world from the demons. She’s the first person Eddie Riggs meets when he comes to the Age of Metal.

She helped him through a variety of battles, eventually falling in love with him, and he gave her a pendant to prove he trusted her when other people didn’t. However, after a demon (mistakenly) revealed that she was a traitor, another of the humans turned Eddie against Ophelia, and they left her behind.

Heartbroken, she made her way back to the Sea of Black Tears that corrupted her parents, and drawn by its siren song, she hurled herself into its murky waters…and Drowned Ophelia emerged to take her place.

Building an army of tear-drinking addicts she called the Drowning Doom, Drowned Ophelia set out to get her revenge on Eddie, half-siding with the demons she had loathed before to help facilitate her vengeance. She led the Drowning Doom in several battles against Eddie, but eventually lost, and had just retreated back into her fortress above the Sea of Black Tears when she switched worlds.

PERSONALITY:

Drowned Ophelia is in many ways a creature born entirely of heartbreak, loss, rage and vengeance. Those are not the only emotions she can feel, but they do fuel the majority of her actions. She wants revenge on Eddie for breaking her heart, she wants revenge on all the other humans in the Age of Metal for not trusting her just because of her parents. Imagine someone pushed so thoroughly to the breaking point by life, completely alone, completely devoid of a support system or anything to hope for, that they kill themselves…and then keep going.

Her primary emotional goal was revenge against Eddie while she was in the Age of Metal. Now that she has been transported somewhere else, somewhere without an Eddie or an army of Bladeshenge to hate, she’ll have to find some other thing to focus her attention on. Some of the classic Ophelia may emerge, the woman who hates slavery and prostitution and wants to ‘fix’ the world by removing its darker elements. But she’s still a creature of malice, and would probably want to remove those elements by murdering the people responsible.

She has a wicked sense of humor, a tendency towards sarcastic remarks, and absolutely adores a good ironic situation. She’s a decent leader on the battlefield, but she wouldn’t actively plan out the best place to ambush someone, and this attitude follows through in other things. She is very much a ‘look before you leap’ type.

In a sense, because of the loss she suffered in the breaking of her heart, she has a soft spot for others who have gone through similar things. A beaten wife, or a girlfriend with a cheating boyfriend will trigger more ‘normal’ emotions in her, wanting to help them, wanting to fix what is broken in them.

She doesn’t trust anyone outside of her own minions, and believes that trust itself is a weakness, allowing you to open the door to pain and suffering and love which should be avoided at all costs.

POWER:

Drowned Ophelia is a construct of the Sea of Black Tears, though she is completely unaware that she is only a copy. The original Ophelia lies sleeping at the bottom of the sea, and the currently-walking-around Ophelia is actually made up entirely of the sea itself. While she has all the necessary organs and functions that a ‘normal’ human would have, they are all driven by the Black Tears, which flow through her body (and are, in fact, created by her body) instead of blood. Despite her odd nature, she isn’t any more ‘difficult’ to kill than an ordinary person, provided you can actually get close enough to harm her. (She is killed in the game by having her black tear heart ripped out.)

Black Tears:

This substance leaks out of her, constantly evaporating into the air around her in thick black waves, and she can manipulate it, creating large balls of black liquid that she smashes down onto people, or as a means of teleportation, sinking into it in one place and emerging from the ground somewhere else. She even can create a limited number of objects from it, including a guitar, her car ‘The Hearse’, and a pair of transparent bat-like wings that allow her to fly. All of her ‘clothing’ in the game consists of Black Tears manipulated to cover her form.

The tears are extremely addicting, and grant anyone who drinks or interacts with them wonderful but terrible powers. In a sense it ‘kills’ them, except that they remain alive and might be granted the ability to survive having their limbs torn off, or to induce mind-numbing fear in anyone who they battle against. Women who wash their hair in the sea found that the hair became alive, tearing their heads from their shoulders and moving to fight in the Drowning Doom’s army. A musician who drank the tears might die only to become a ghostly organist who’s songs drain the life from people. Consuming more of the tears will even heal injuries. Despite these powers, the tears sap those who drink it of their sanity and their will to live, and they all fall under Ophelia’s thrall.

If she went the route of Villain, any henchmen she had would probably be Black Tear Drinkers.

The power of ROCK:

Thanks to Eddie teaching her, and her newfound access to the Black Tears, Ophelia can create an electric guitar out of her black tear cloud and use it to perform several magical attacks. She can cause a lightning strike, or a gout of flame to burst from the ground.

In the Land of Metal she can perform solo’s that might make a bridge collapse or rebuild itself, summon her car from the Sea of Black Tears, or call down an airstrike of twisted black tear eyeballs, but I’m not sure how to translate that into a different setting.

Tiny minor useless power: Soundtrack

Music is a huge part of Brutal Legends, and so its hard for me to imagine the characters existing without their background music. So I was thinking in some situations, Ophelia would just…have music playing in the air around her. It would vary depending on what she was doing and the circumstances of the action, and I’d link to each song (probably on youtube) so people know what it is.

COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:

[The video flicks to life showing the evening skyscape, lights out in the city just flicking on here and there. It shakes faintly, and seems to be moving slowly to the right, as whomever is holding the phone walks along the edge of the rooftop they are standing on. Occasionally a waft of something black and oily drifts up in front of the screen only to fade away into the air.]

My, isn’t this a fascinating place. So much like that strange future Eddie described, all this fancy technology and all these free and happy people bouncing about their little lives…

And no Eddie, and no Deviculus, and even that stupid whore Lita are all gone here…no army either, that could be an issue…still.

[Down on the street below there is the sound of a car accident, and the camera lurches forward, half-blocked by the edge of the roof but a pretty rough looking accident can be seen down on the street. Suddenly the speaking woman is laughing softly.]

Well now.

[The camera moves up to show the woman speaking, she is in her early twenties, with night black hair, and very obviously blue skin. She is smiling a rather wicked looking smile.]

Hello New World. I’ve come to play.

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:

While Ophelia’s initial reaction to this new world had been one of fascination, now that night had set in it was more one of confusion and irritation. The fact that she hadn’t actually killed Eddie before being drawn here was gnawing at her, and honestly a lot of the technology and buildings and…everything…here were rather disorienting to her.

So she had gone wandering in search of somewhere a bit more like home, and wound up in one of the cities parks. It actually reminded her more of the jungle than anything else, the trees were all green and wood, no chord trees or metal claw trees or anything normal. There weren’t even any wandering beasts.

But it was still better than being surrounded by the noise of the cars and the buildings and all the people. She’d seen more people in ten minutes than she suspected lived in the entirety of her homeland. All so happy and oblivious and happy. Ugh.

But the park was a bit better, and so she wandered through it, staying off the path and listening to the quieter sounds of nature and the soft rolling of the music that seemed to follow her around in this place. She actually liked that quite a bit, though she wasn’t really sure why it was happening.

But then she heard the scream. A woman’s voice, younger, filled with fear and a hint of pain. “Hmm.”

Blue legs carried her towards the sound, and she emerged from the trees to find a young woman wearing practically nothing being accosted by an older man wielding a knife. He slashed at her, and the woman fell back onto her rear with another scream, loud enough to make Ophelia’s teeth hurt.

Without missing a beat she marched towards them, stretching her hand out in front of her and drawing her alabaster electric guitar from the air. The woman noticed her approaching, and shouted something about needing help, but before the man could add anything Ophelia plucked three of her thick metal strings and an arc of blue lightning shot out from the instrument, crashing into the man and sending him sprawling to the ground, twitching, his weapon clattering away into the darkness.

And then it was completely silent, aside from her quiet music. The woman was staring at her in shock, though when that broke she nearly leapt to her feet, taking a nervous half-step backwards. “W-what did you…?”

Ophelia gave her a glance over and saw that she didn’t seem to be particularly injured, and then focused her dark eyes on the womans face, smiling that sarcastic smile of hers. “You should probably run, this doesn’t seem like a terribly safe place.”

The woman turned and bolted like a frightened raptor elk, and Ophelia released her guitar, letting it vanish as she turned her attention to the fallen man. Maybe he had some of that ‘money’ the people she had first spoken to told her about…

Well, only one way to find out.

FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:

In the game Drowned Ophelia is always blue, but would it be possible for her to have some control over that here? She could disguise herself as the ‘real’ Ophelia, in appearance if not in personality, and use that as her secret identity.
