Och - these things follow a pattern - America's a young nation - you're just gearing up for empire building - we've already done that - next comes laziness and a general sense that you've had your day...

yes, but I think that the progress the England and NZ have made outweighs any social policies that we've got here. Especially that damned Invasion of Privacy, uh...I mean, "Patriot" (and the term in used loosely) act.

To expand slightly, the erosion of the middle class and rise of religious fundamentalism in this country is making it look more and more like a midieval or at least pre-modern europe, while europe itself has become the progressive leader both socially and economically, whith better healthcare, education, retirement systems, and better social systems for the most part.
