denton folk--whats this about the tomato burning?? i can't even remember what, if anything, i knew about it closing. :sigh:

Well, last year a realty group bought most/all of the block surrounded by Fry St. and Welch St. and Oak St. and Hickory St. They plan on developing a new shopping area and what not. The only thing that they didn't buy was half of Cool Beans, because the bar owner owned it. Chopsticks moved to Ave C and Scripture, the Tomato closed, and I'm not sure about TJ's, Texas Jive, or the coffee bar that used to be there. Cool Beans is still open, but only half it's original size. The tomato closed about a month ago or so. Last week, someone threw a bomb through the window and it caught fire and burned to the ground. Sucks. I liked the Tomato. A few days before it burned down, someone also sprayed green spray paint over the faces of that old mural on the back of the buildings facing Oak st. People can be real bastards.

One of my best Dentonite friends captured the burning on film. He's editing his footage into a documentary for the film festival next month. It is to be titled, "The Burning of Fry Street". Fitting, I guess, but if it hadn't burned, it would have been bombed. Two separate acts of arson that night. Two best friends were guilty ... And they never even told each other what their plans were.

*sigh* Its a complicated and increasingly familiar tale of corporate greed, community and culture, and the idiocy of an impassioned youth with no constructive outlet.
