If you can excuse my bluntness, I don't know what more there is to consider. At the heart of the matter is a conflict between those two desires. Is it cruel to allow a creature to fight and bring harm to itself, or is it cruel to keep them caged, denying them the chance to act out their instincts.

She's already made her choice. You owe her yours.

Aya has offered to let mine train against his, which has less risk, but it doesn't let them protect me as they want to. Cruelty is only part of what I'm concerned about.
