Since you seem to follow C-Pop, it should be easier to describe what kind of music I like to you: I like MandoPop, but not really "idol" singers, more singer-songwriters like Jay Chou, LeeHom Wang, Khalil Fong, etc. I also like oldies and folk, some pop rock, and I listen to enough indie music to have an Indievox account. If you like old popular "vintage" songs then you should just try Edith Piaf (well just in case you don't know) and Georges Brassens's Les amoureux des bancs publics. But that's REALLY old.
As for French rock, there are some 'modern groups" who sing in English like Phoenix or Pony Pony Run Run but if you want it in French... I would say : M (or Mathieu Chedid), Olivia Ruiz, Dionysos...
Some old but quite legendary groups : Indochine (personally I only like Alice et June), Rita mitsouko, Téléphone (Cendrillon, New York avec toi, La Bombe Humaine)... Hope I gave you enough landmarks even though it's quite biased =)
