It sounds like the corny thing to do, but think about it from her angle. How would YOU respond to you if you were your mother? I'm sure that she'll be delighted to know that you still look to confide in her, and that you still have the maturity to get on the phone and basically say, "Hey Ma, I have a splendid boy and I want to start having sex; I want to get on the pill with your help." Even if there's been a widening gap, I have a feeling that this can only be a positive experience that leads to a refreshment in your relationship with your mom, but also poon, as Raph so eloquently noted.

Talk to your Mom, and even though it may be hard for her, she will get used to it. All parents have to adjust to having adults instead of children at some time. It is so great that you and your Mom are close, so i say try to preserve that at all costs. By the way, we totally have to visit since i haven't seen you in so long that i can't remember when it was.
