Wow was that pretty.

You can't read a review of Avatar without reading about the visuals, and for damned good reason. This is a beautiful movie even without the 3D effects; the bona-fide next gen 3D pushes it into "You have got to see this!" territory.

"A few even manage to get close, most notably Sigourney Weaver playing a hybrid of Ellen Ripley and Jane Goodall."

That statement is highly accurate, given that Weaver played Dian Fossey in the film "Gorillas in the Mist."

I haven't managed to see it yet but I think we'll get to it on Xmas eve or over the weekend. :D It's nice to see your thoughts. Considering Cameron was involved, I expected it to be a primarily "oooshiny!" flick. Have a great Christmas, hon!

My feeling was that Cameron used the fact that he was working with "aliens" and spectacular CG to make the most naive possible "white man goes to the natives" movie ever. Seriously, there were parts where I was cringing in my seat. I especially liked the traditional part where the white guy learns all of the natives' ways ... in three months ... and then turns out to be better at it then they are, because he's just awesome. (c.f. The Last Samurai. Actually this movie IS that movie but with giant blue aliens standing in for Japanese people.)
