The terms left and right are derived from the members of the national assembly during the French Revolution. Conservatives/royalists sat on the right side of the room while reformers/progressives sat on the left.

The arts academy opened for business my senior year, I was part of the first graduating class! That school was so great that year. It was like private school, very little strict senseless rules, lots of case by case exceptions, everyone knew everyone--only the core academics weren't great for seniors (there were only 40 of us) but the arts classes were superb!
