"The end of preaching is not information, it’s persuasion."

it took my reading this a few times to realize that "end" meant "purpose," as opposed to "finale." it makes MUCH more sense to me now.

i don't know if i agree though...

by preaching, aren't we giving information about God, His character, and His interaction with creation. sure, that might be a form of persuasive argument, in a sense, but couldn't we argue that the persuasion itself is done by God?

i dunno, i just woke up, so i'm throwing this around in my head...

Yes, we are giving information when we preach, yet like evangelism, the goal is toward persuasion and conviction. However, if no one is persuaded it does not mean that you have not preached. But if you do not strive to preach persuasively then you are not really preaching.

J lives!

I thought it was to encourage and enlighten through the gospel. I like this quote though. :-)

Is not enlightening and encouraging one through the Gospel not persauding a person about the Gospel? The preacher's job is to do this, but I think that persuading is a larger category, because you must be convinced before enlightening and encouraging will be effective. :) Thanks for the comment! My pastor sent me this quote and I'm glad a couple of people have commented because it's letting me see how far reaching this quote really is! I hope you are continuing to feel better and Rach and I hope to see you and Sam soon!
